i would request you to not do any changes by yourself to your ipod. its better you show your ipod to an authorised service center.

if you ipod is frozen or stuck on one screen you can reset the ipod by holding the menu and center button at the same time-

the ipod will reboot and go back to the main menu

First try resetting the iPod. If this does not work then restore it.

My suggestion would be to put the iPod in "Disk Mode" and see if it mounts better.
Hold the menu and center button untill the apple logo appears.
then switch your fingers to the center button and the play/pause buttons until you see your in disk mode.
reattach your cable and it should be able to mount.

If your iPod does not mount, your could be having Hard Drive problems. In which case, I would restore the iPod and see if your iPod starts acting proper.
