Will not scan photos, only slides

I have scanned many photos with the canoscan 8600F with success. Later I took out the protective back, put in the slide holder and scanned slides successfully also. However, when I put back the protective back and took out the slide holder, and tried to do photo scanning again it would not work.

Where are you scanning from? Do you get an error? If scanning from Toolbox, check the box that says to use ScanGear or use the Scanner driver. Then make sure it is not set for Film as the select source.

Scan from in to Microsoft Word

To be able to do that without problems you have to have installed the whole program for the scanner..I mean the driver and the software to manage it ..This can be downloaded from canon support site in case you do not have it on a disk ...or in the computer ..
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan_8600f#DriversAndSoftware
here is the link where you can download the canoscan toolbox..which is teh software I was talking about ..
So , the procedure is to initiate the scanning from the toolbox in the computer ..and during the wizard ..select the preferences to scan document ..and not photo ..This will probably give you the possibility to select the program to be scanned into ..or will scan in word by default..remember to select the option to scan document ..and not picture..otherwise will scan as a photo and will end up with a jpeg of gif file ..
Please do not hesitate to ask more questions in a comment if you have something you did not understood..and please rate my answer cause it affects my work here ..

Scans are taking a long time to scan.

1) Your scanning image resolution may be too higher set 300 dpi / 400 dpi / 600 dpi. Scanning now fast.... not ok look step 2
2) Re-Install Scanner driver / down load new driver. not ok look step 3
2) Replace USB cable.

I have a CanoScan 8600F. When I want to scan I get the not enough space on the target disk

This seems to happen quite often with the Canon scanners. If you know you have enough space on your hard drive, open the CanoScan Toolbox, then click on Settings and change the folder where the temporary files are stored to another folder of your choice, or create a new one in your documents.

My canoscan 8400F suddenly stopped working last week. I had been scanning slides thru Photoshop when on my next scan attempt, I got this message: Cannon scan for these reasons: -The original may not...

You have to remove the white protective sheet from the the lid. Once you remove it you will be able to scan film. Also make sure the lock button is not in the lock position.

Open the Canoscan Toolbox.
Click the Save option.
Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
Click Scan.
Click the Advanced Mode tab.
Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
Click the Preview button at the top left

Another thing is this can be caused by a faulty FAU cable. One or more of the eight wires within this cable has fractured

Receive "cannot scan because the original may not be set correct.

Is your Scanner locked ? If yes then you will see there's a solid plastic backing on the inside of the lid that needed to be removed. Also remove all protective plastic too.

Cannot scan film and slides

Check the cable that connects to the lid of the scanner. If it is disconnected, you won't get the Film options.
