Thanks for the quick response ,

yes I tried the reset , this is a new boat and the connections are good . It did work for a day or so then slowly it stopped functioning and now all I can do is play a cd without being able to use any of the function keys like scan etc. :-(

I have the exact same problem. Only the CD works and all buttons and functions are frozen. My boat is 2 years old and we have checked all connections, reset, checked all connections and paid for someone to come and check fuses, battery and again, all the connections.

I have the same problem. The radio will come on and is stuck on an FM station, none of the faceplate buttons will work. I unplugged the wires to the remote and the faceplate works fine now. Sooooo, if i replug the remote, the faceplate won't work. What's the problem? I would like the remote to be hooked up and work.

Hi,

Initially, have you tried a full hard reset? The reset button is at the panel at the back of the faceplate, bottom left side. Of course doing so will also erase all presets and user settings & configurations.

Additionally, pls verify that the multiple contacts pins are clean, free of corrosion and makes a positive contact with its mate at the rear of the faceplate. If the unit is used in a salty environment, it may be necessary to manually scrape of whatever blue green build up develops between the connector pins and the plastic insulator. You can try using an old toothbrush and WD40.

Further to check are:
1. the red, yellow and black wire are tightly connected where they are supposed to be connected. If the unit is used onboard, it might be to your advantage to likewise check the grounding system;
2. one of the rear connector is for a remote, pls likewise check that none of the pins are shorting and no presence of any corrosion.

If problem persists, it may be necessary to seek the services of a qualified professional as this involves opening the unit up and tracing the circuitry of the logic/controller circuit.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

If I may ask a few questions:
    1. does the boat operates on 12VDC or something else (24 or 36 with a DC to DC converter)?
    2. any other electronics physically near or electrically tied (using the same bus) to the JBL such as fishfinder, VHF, weatherfax, GPS?
    3. is the problem present even with all other electronics powered off, engine off, generator off?

Incidentally, since the JBL is on a new boat, it would presumably be new also and therefore would be carrying some sort of warranty. Perhaps your best bet would be to demand a replacement.

    Would appreciate any other update(s).

    Cheers.

If you unplug the BLACK wire LABELED remote control, this controls the rear radio controls on the boat, then make sure your power is off and re-plug it,this should fix your problem. I experienced the same but the head unit only stayed on FM not CD. I have a question for anyone reading this, has anyone hooked up an amp to this head unit?

The JBL MR17 transom remote hasn't worked in years. I took it all apart and cleaned it but everything looks good. I will definitely try the reset button to see if that works. CD player wouldn't eject my CD until one day the CD just ejected itself and then out came a second CD! Problem solved. Then I tried playing a CD I burned. It loaded and indicated it was spinning but it wouldn't play. Turns out I ripped the music in MP3 format which the JBL MR17 doesn't recognize. All I have to do is change the ripping file format I'm using. I tried a prerecorded CD in the player and it worked just fine. Just putting this out there in case it helps someone with a similar problem.

I have a MR-17 with three remotes and had the same problem. I found one of the remotes was plug-in in the wrong direction. Yes you can do that. I pulled it, realigned it to the direction it should go in and all worked.

JBL Marine MR-15B radio/cd player. When I press any button unit changes from mono to stereo and that is all it will do?

Question edited for clarity, proper 'make model (what it is)'.

I can't find a manual, but they have a common theme. Remove the faceplate and press the Reset Button, then clean the contacts both sides with electrical switch cleaner or Isopropyl Alcohol.

JBL MR-17.2 not recognizing Sirius satellite receiver.

I have the exact same issue. I have swapped with two identical MR17.2 radios and swapped out the sirius receiver. No change. I even bought a remote thinking I had to have a remote installed to get it to work...still no diff. Have you ever found a solution?

I have a JBL MR-17.2 Sirius Ready stereo

To get your Sirius ID number from you MR-17 JBL stereo, select the Mode button until it displays "Sirius". Then push and hold the Mode button for a couple seconds and it will chirp and display 3 blank spaces. Enter three zeros, "000" in these 3 spaces. The Zero is the loud button labeled "LD". When you do that, it will display your Sirius ID number. :)
