The picture from the DVD part of DVD recorder/player has started to break up, and even to stall. I have tested the DVD's on another player, and they play without problem, so it's not the DVD itself. The HDD part of the equipment works without problem. Any ideas about the cause ?

Thank you for your prompt reply. You are right - the picture on the TV screen is not normal. It becomes 'pixelated' (i.e breaks up into digital 'bits' - usually horizontally across the middle of the screen, and then, on other occasions, the picture freezes. Now I think about it, I note that the HDD part of the system also exhibits similar problems, but not so severe, which I have always assumed this was due to a poor signal from Freeview, but now you are making me think that the two items might be connected. One other thing to note is that the sound signal, which is connected via my hi fi, tends to come on one channel only - I need to fiddle with the cable from the DVD recorder for it to broadcast in stereo - so your observation about cable problems may be signficant.

    Hi,

I think we have some 'crossed wires' !! between us.

My DVD picture break up problem is occuring with my Sony DVD HXD970, and therefore I am not able to follow the instructions you have set out to donwload software to my computer, since I have no way of transferring that to my DVD Recorder.

I am sorry to have created confusion. My DVD recorder is attached to my TV, which is a Sony Bravia KDL 26T2800, which has no connection to my computer.

It does, however, have 2 USB ports, so maybe I can action your suggestion in that way, although I have not tried to use these ports before now.

Thank you. My goodness me you are quick !!!

If the player plays from its hdd without problem than the issue is with the laser head reader...so my recommendation is to seek a cleaning laser lens disk ...and clean it ..cause it might have issues from using bad disks or dirty ones..or just from time passing usage ...
here is an example with the thing Im talking about
http://www.expotv.com/Philips-CD-Laser-Lens-Cleaner-PH62052-C/1C-A4G
you can find one in any store with computers and dvd'es..or just borrow one from a friend ...ask around ..

I need to know more about your problem, would you mind if I ask you to let me know the exact problem? You mean the video/picture shown on the screen is not correct, like twisted or tracking or not normal when playing from the Dvd Recorder? There are several possibilities, first install another dvd recorder on your system using same cable and connect it on the same port where the current Dvd recorder is installed. Play any video and check if the problem persists or not. If not then, the problem must be with the Dvd recorder's Lens. You need to replace the lens. I would recommend buying another since repairing or replacing will cost you nearly the cost of buying a new one. If the same problem persists with another Dvd write/recorder, then the Port must be bad or the cable is the faulty. Try with another cable and on another Port (maybe ide or sata connectors on the motherboard which suits your dvd drive).

If you need further help, please let me know with the queries mentioned above.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Well, thanks for your rapid response. Let try with codecs and Directx. Download Klite Mega Codec packs (click here), install it and restart your computer. Now play any Media Saved on the Hard drive or from the DVD-Drive and check whether this helps or not. If you don't see any changes, then update directx (click here) [I am not sure about directx whether it'll be compatible or not, since I have no idea with your system configuration, I can't make it specific, if this isn't compatible, just google it and download --> unzip --> and install it.]

Restart your computer once again, play a media and let me know. It's also possible that the monitor's resolution is having problem, and I can also suspect the graphics card or drivers or the motherboard. Anyway, let's try to troubleshoot step by step to narrow down and find out the culprit.

If it's possible, please update the graphics drivers as well.

    All the best.

I am sorry, I can't get what you exactly mean. Aren't you using the same pc to write these mails to me? Is the the problem on another pc or with the pc you are currently using? If this is the one that you are using where the dvd-recorder is connected, you need not to transfer, you need to download the mentioned codecs on your system and install it. If the Dvd-Recorder is connected on another system (without internet connection), then simply transfer it using a Flash Drive or Memory card, etc.. There are still many options even if you can't access or write with the dvd writer. You can connect your phone on this system, copy the downloaded files to your phone's memory card and transfer it to the other computer.

If this isn't what you mean, let me know.

    Good luck;

haha.. our intention to fix the problem was very different. I was thinking that your problem is with your Dvd-Write on your computer since you've posted this question on the same category. Well, you can't do this (the instructions i'd given) with the external/standalone dvd recorder, you have to update the firmware if possible (but i have no idea with this model whether firmware update is possible or not.). Your best solution is replace the Lens, no need to work around this way and that way.

Let me try to find if Firmware Update is possible with your model or not. Once again Good luck.

Yes, you are lucky, the firmware update feature is available for this Model. Open this link (click here). Follow the on-screen instructions and download it. On the page, first save the instructions for yourself and scroll down to the bottom Select the "I have read the disclaimer and.... " and click "Accept" button, download will begin automatically. Just follow the instructions on how to update the firmware. Let me know if you need my help.

If this isn't helpful, you can also check out this page (click here), for more information and troubleshooting methods.

    Good luck.

I'm glad we got that sorted out !!! My mistake for using the wrong category. 'd welcome some information on firmware update, but in the mean time, Your guide on cables was very useful, so I am going to change my scart cable, since that is clearly defective, and if that doesn't fix it, then try to clean the lens. Look forward to firmware suggestions in due course. Very helpful.

Purchase a DVD recorder/player that has a HDMI cable connection and use the connections on the TV so you'll get a hi def picture. RF will NOT give you a Hi Definition picture even if it's up converted.

Recorder does not recognize disk - set up may be wrong. I try to follow the pictures but to no avail

After 5 years, even the premium expensive DVD/VHS machines are usually worn out: the typical lifespan of a DVD recorder burner before it starts in with "no disc" issues is about 3 years.

My Magnavox VCR/DVD combo groans when I set the timer recording. It doesn't make the noise when I turn it off.

I hate to sound elitist or negative, but VCR is over, much in the same way that cassette tapes are over. It is even getting hard to find DVD recorders which stand alone. Additionally, I would urge you to record all of your home movies and significant recordings to DVD while you can. VCR tapes degrade pretty rapidly compared to DVD. And now, even DVD is on the way out. Get up to speed. You'll be glad you did!

Whenever I burn a DVD in my recorder I can't get it to play in anything other than the recorder it was made with. When inserted into my DVD drive on my computer it says it is a CD with nothing on it...

You need to FINALISE the recorded disc for compatible playback in any DVD player or PC. This should be a menu option on your DVD recorder. (similar to DVD management on Panasonic recorders).

It always helps to do a test recording on some discs first, then finalise them to see how they play elsewhere before going ahead and doing serious recording in this unit.

I get a double picture when using my JVC DR-MV150B. It used to work and then this started and I can't seem to get it right

Maybe is due to the progressive scan feature or a resulotion issue on the TV . . . press OUTPUT STATUS button on the front panel repeatedly until the picture seems normal...

Try replacing the video cable (S-VIDEO or RCA or HDMI) . . or test the DVD player in another TV ..

Dmr-ES30V Dvd plays pre record movies fine but I

Try a different brand of blank dvd+r or -r. you will find that your dvd machine is fussy on what discs it plays. More exspensive dvd players are fussy with what dvd discs you put in, as cheaper dvd players would virtualy play most types of dvds.
