I have a 1F81-51 White-Rodgers thermostat that keeps resetting itself back to the factory default settings. I've chnaged the batteries, but it continues to automatically reset itself after I have programmed the cooling settings. What can be done to eliminate this behavior (besides setting the HOLD button)?

I had the exact same problem. Even pressing the Hold button does not really help, because once it resets - the Hold temperature also changes to the default.

I fixed this by replacing the 470 micro-Farad / 10v capacitor in the unit (it's the grey-colored capacitor). To access the back of the circuit board, you will need to break 2 plastic rivets holding the front of the unit to the base.

After replacing the capacitor I've not had any resets for the past 3 days (it used to reset itself every couple of hours).

Hope this helps.

Hi Noel, I had the same problem, and replaced the capacitor. The thermostat is now working. Many thanks!

Also replaced my capacitor and it's working great so far as opposed to resetting every day or two. Had to break a couple plastic pegs to open it up. Didn't have a 470 micro farad on hand so I salvaged two 1,000 micro farad capacitors from a dead power supply and added them in series.

Thanks Noel from 2020 COVID-19 shelter in place!!

White-Rodgers 1f86-244 thermostat still shows "battery" after replacing batteries

If your White-Rodgers 1f86-244 thermostat still shows "battery" after replacing the batteries, it is possible that the thermostat is not detecting the new batteries or that the batteries are not properly installed. Here are some steps you can try to fix this problem:
  1. Check the battery installation: Make sure that the batteries are installed correctly and that they are making good contact with the terminals. You may need to remove the batteries and then reinstall them to make sure they are seated properly.
  2. Check the battery type: Make sure that you are using the correct type of batteries for your thermostat. The White-Rodgers 1f86-244 thermostat requires two AA batteries, so make sure you are using AA batteries and not some other type.
  3. Reset the thermostat: If the battery installation and type are correct, you may need to reset the thermostat to clear any errors or issues that may be causing the "battery" message to appear. To reset the thermostat, remove the batteries and then press and hold the "Set" button while reinserting the batteries. This will reset the thermostat to its factory default settings.
If these steps do not fix the problem, it is possible that the thermostat is faulty and needs to be replaced. You can contact White-Rodgers customer support for assistance with replacing your thermostat.

My thermostat resets itself

BE absolutely sure the batteries are good. This is what usually causes this symptom, even it the 'battery indicator' isn't asking for a new battery. It happens a lot on systems that are being turned off with the breaker, safety or service switch; DON'T do that. When you put a set of brand new alkaline or lithium batteries, with the thermostat off the wall, leave NO batteries in it for about an hour. Be sure that the power is on 24/7 to the system. To stop the system from running, always use the "Heat--Off--Cool" switch.

I have an Amanda Heat pump W/o heat with a White Rodgers Thermostat 1F89=211. i messed up an tried to program. It now flashes L with a 76 setting an I can't move the up an down...

Hi I looked up the book, L is a malfunction terminal but I've rarely seen it connected also it says something about the backlight display feature displaying (dL).....Best bet is gently pull the thermo front off the wall REMOVE the batterys for about 10-15 minutes and the thermo will at least restore (reset) the factory default settings & start over.

First off, I have e-mailed and faxed White-Rodgers over the last week with no reply. I own the 1F94-371 Thermostat. A week ago, the display went blank. Looked like a battery issue, but I see no battery. ...

Dear Steven,

First of all the thermostat that you have is hardwire powered. You need to check for the power coming in the thermostat which is the c- terminal. If that is confirmed reset the thermostat, reset button
located on the back of the thermostat body.
