phone randomly shuts off and have to turn it back on. any solutions on this problem...

  • Anonymous May 07, 2008

Phone automatically shuts off. Happened three times in a day.

  • Anonymous May 08, 2008

Same thing. Happens periodically. Happened 6 times today randomly while i was in the middle of texting even though battery is fully charged

  • Anonymous May 13, 2008

    Also here -
Phone unexpectedly shuts off. I was waiting for a call from home that never came - phone was definitely on, because I'd made a call earlier.

Several times in the last week or so the phone shuts off when I pick it up, or even when not being touched.

I've swapped batteries out - no help.
I've tried leaving this plugged into AC adapter - problem doesn't happen for me then.

I haven't called VZ yet, but I just may since it seems many folks are just seeing this problem since May 1- so it may be a software update they pushed out.

  • davefrank May 26, 2008

Hey everyone, I went back into verizon and they told me my phne needed a software update. So two days after the ran the software update it was still shutting off. I took it back and they replaced it with the new verizon LG ENV which is sturdier and has had no problems. Cheers.

  • mekinoodle May 29, 2008

I'm on my second enV in 3 months and it's doing the same thing. I called VZ and they said it was a software issue but there wasn't an update to fix it. They told me to get a new one. So I'm awaiting my 3rd new enV. Maybe the 3rd times the charm?

  • rallymaster Jun 02, 2008

For the last two weeks I'll check my phone for messages and findthat it has shut down. I rarely make or receive calls but when I do they are important. I don't want to miss emergency calls from my family. Right now I just turn it back on and check for missed calls or messages.

  • jenna chi Jun 26, 2008

I had the same problem with shutting off randomly, and also going to a soft mute mode for no reason....I took it into VZ and they immediately ordered a new one, priority delivery to my home, all at no charge, and no questions asked. I would urge everyone to do this, and tell anyone with this model phone to replace it, before they have problems.

  • Nenocs Jun 26, 2008

Thanks for the tip everyone! My enV shuts off by itself and I wasn't even looking how to fix it. It only happens once in a week, so it doesn't bother me too much. I ran across this and thought,"I can finally get one of those new enVs for free!" Haha, anyway, thanks a lot. I will be taking a trip to my Verizon store.

my phone shuts off after a missed call..... very annoying

  • Anonymous Jul 22, 2008

My enV has has this problem since i purchased it and it's only gotten worse...it did get worse in may but considering the fact that a small tap in just the right spot makes it turn off instantly (depending on the day), i'm really doubting that it's a software issue...my friend purchased the same phone the same day as me and his has recently started doing the same thing...HARDWARE defect...should be replaced with a new model...

  • Anonymous Oct 09, 2008

I bought this phone brand-new in April 2008. It's October now. For over a month I've been having trouble with the phone shutting itself off at random. It makes no sound indicating that it's done so, so I won't even know it's off til I go to look at the time or something. When I go to turn the phone back on it'll take me three or four tries because of a weird error where the screen will say "Use genuine battery" and then counts down from 10 before powering off. The battery that's in the phone is the one it came with -- FROM VERIZON -- six months ago. It has LG's logo right on it. I never let my battery get more than one bar down from full so I know it's not a low-power issue. I do not have a home phone -- this is my only phone and so it's a really big deal if I miss a call because of this. I find it hard to believe that it's a software issue (the battery error tells me it's hardware) but I guess I'll try having Verizon update my software and see if that helps.

  • iamcoleny Oct 22, 2008

My EnV was also shutting off. At first it was very infrequently and then all of a sudden would turn off a few times a day, and then I couldn't get through writing a TXT without it shutting off. I brought it to Verizon and they gave me a replacement EnV (no charge/no hassle).

If you are having the same problem, I suggest you bring it in ASAP. My phone wouldn't stay on long enough to extract all my contacts, pics etc... Or, maybe you're smart and have your contacts stored online. I was not so smart.

  • nat122972 Oct 25, 2008

ok so i took my env into the verizon store because it randomly shuts off all the time. they told me it needed a software update. they said this was a common problem, after the software update i was still having the same problem. i took it in again and another tech told me there was a setting in the software of the phone that i could not access that will shut my phone off if it gets warmer than 73 degrees. she took my phone around the corner for about 20 seconds and came back and said she changed the setting and insisted that it would solve the problem. has anyone ever heard of this or was she scammin' me?

  • codman6594 Nov 02, 2008

it just randomly shuts off. it doesn't even power down just "blacks out" and i have to restart it

  • Anonymous Nov 03, 2008

I just took my enV for the software update the end of the last week and it still shuts off. This phone was a replacement because I had to take my last phone back 3 times; the first time the send button to make calls didn't work, the second time the two pieces of the phone came apart, and the third time it wouldn't charge. I am so sick of these LG phones and verizon. I don't have too many problems with the service minus text messaging in the evenings, but I have been having too many problems in the past year or so, and now I'm starting to think of changing services. It's just ridiculous.

  • IhatemyENV Nov 15, 2008

I have the same problem,Except I have water damage from being a swimmer and the water in the air, and I am not under warranty.

  • Anonymous Nov 21, 2008

I am glad I took the time to Google this as my phone has been randomly turning off and it's really annoying me! I'll check my phone and it'll be off, to then turn it on and see I have missed calls/vmails. I got my enV a little less than a year ago and within 4 months it was bringing up different short keys when I would press the contacts button of the arrows buttons. I never dropped it on the ground or in the water, and they could never figure out what was wrong with it after several tries of everything to fix it. I got a new one for all my problems and haven't had anything happen since then. I suppose that will be the fix this time too, but I've got another year on my contract so I'm stuck with problems. I think it has something to do with it flipping open and it's shorting out some how. Just my 2 cents. Thanks everyone.

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2008

And I've replaced it once already. they want to charge me $50.00. I'm just going to wait go tmy contact to end I guess.

  • Anonymous Nov 27, 2008

the guy at verizon said that this is a common problem with the EnV. the phones they will replace you with are usually refurbished so that probably wont help all that much. Its cheap that they would advratisethese when they knew that this was a problem. why do you think the price was cut in half last year?

  • jled2008wv Dec 02, 2008

I Got my LG Voyager 2 Days ago.. It has already randomly shut off 5 times, when I was texting or taking pictures. And now It has shut off, and will not even turn back on.. I have tried everything to get it back on also.

  • Anonymous Jan 03, 2009

mine only shuts off after sending a text message. Why is that? not every text message though, only after I send every other text message, it just shuts off right after it sends it.

  • Tiffany Mar 30, 2009

My LG enV would power down at random times, mostly when on the internet or scrolling through pictures. It didnt happen at first but once it started to do it, it just got worse. Then it started having a problem randomly with forwarding picture messages, I would go to select a name from my phone book and it would show it checked but when I hit the button to add it to the content, it wouldnt add it. I had the phone for about 10 months. I went to the Verizon store and they told me that I would have to duplicate the problem, luckily the next day the forwarding was still not working. I went to the store again and they gave me a replacement. The same day I got the phone it started to shut off at random times again, I've had this phone for 3 days and it did it twice the first night, and once each day for next two days since then. I wish they would just give me a different type of phone.

  • Anonymous Apr 03, 2009

when i am in the middle of a text message it cuts off. then then i am on the pictures it shuts off. its annoying but no one believes me.

  • jkwilliams23 May 05, 2009

Phone randlomly shuts off whenever... shuts off after I send a text or when I am on the phone.

  • Anonymous May 09, 2009

Ive replaced my env for the same reasons. the phone shuts off randomly or the phone will not charge. its getting very out of hand. another 50 dollars down the drain for a problem verizon simply does not know the solution to. I DO NOT recommed their LG phones.

  • kath82 May 14, 2009

stupid LG EnV 2 shuts itself off. Horrible because IT USE IT AS MY ALARM CLOCK....so yes I've been late to work because of a dumb cell phone. Now I'm forced to use the jarring old alarm clock and not a nice little song. Can't depend on it! I've also missed very important calls only to check the phone an HOUR LATER and it was off the whole time.

Its like it has a life of its own.

I have had the same problem. It would shut down 3 or 4 times a day. I always had to check the phone to make sure it was on - very annoying. Here is what I did to fix my problem:

I took the battery out and noticed that the 4 battery terminals did not have the shiny brass/gold appearance that I thought that they should have. I took a Q-tip with some alcohol and cleaned the 4 battery terminals on the battery and the phone. I put the battery back in and the phone has not shut off (by itself) for 4 straight days now.

I would give this a try before any other drastic action.

So, I took it into Verizon, and they just updated the software. It took 45 minutes but it works perfectly. beware, save your conctacts online, because everything gets wiped out when they do this. But, my phne works perfectly.

Take the battery out. Take a clean pencil eraser and "clean" the connection between the battery and the phone by erasing them. The connection can sometimes build up grease which makes the connection end sometimes.

Problem - enV (and several other phones) randomly powering off.

The cause - There are two possible culprits. One is a software error, and the other is third party ringtones. Yes, ringtones. Those ones you got for free? They're breaking your phone.

The solution - If you have third party ringtones DELETE THEM, otherwise this problem will never end. If you don't have third party ringtones then take the phone into your local store and either get the software flashed or just have it straight up replaced.

I was at a Verizon store when someone came into tech support with the same shutting down issue. Turns out the software version had to be updated and that resolved the issue.

I've had the same problem for about a month now. For anyone who has this problem, bring it to your nearest verizon outlet, and they will perform a software update(if you have the old software) but this doesn't necessarily work. Plust it takes 45 minutes, so that's 45 minutes of either waiting in the store or shopping elsewhere. But I brought my phone back tonight, and they performed a software update, but it did NOTHING. About an hour later, my phone had shut off just as it did before. I heard a rumor that it could be because of third party ringtones, but I'm just going to ignore that fact because there's no way I'm going to pay money for ringtones, I enjoy the freedom of myxertones =]
But I'm going to be bringing my phone back sometime soon, and this time they will give me a new enV.
For anyone who's confused, they will give you the same exact model you have, not the env2. Plus if you've had your phone for over a year, you may not be under warranty anymore.
I have a friend who was sent a new phone, she got to keep her old one, and recieved a new one for free, no questions asked. She also hasn't complained about her phone turning off.

Solution 13 seems to work so far. the phone was shutting off randomly- after being put down, during charging in the car...when in use. i pulled the battery out, cleaned the contacts on both the phone AND the battery with an eraser (and brushed the erasures away with an old toothbrush). after reassembly, i've tapped the phone over and over on the battery cover and it doesn't shut off now. time will tell, i guess.

The only solution to this is to avoid buying any LG cell phones. I just got one from my job and it has shut down on my at least 5-6 times in less than a month! I have owned LG electronics in the past and based on my experience, I would never buy nor recommend any LG product. I call it the "best, cheap" brand out there. Although, I personally own a Sanyo (Sprint) phone and love it! Stay away from LG plasma TV's and LCD's. They will start malfunctioning within the first year! If you want good Korean, go with Samsung.

I too have these phones and this problem. Turns out that Verizon knows it is their issue, but told me that I have to upgrade and renew a 2 year contract or buy another phone from them with no contact. $$ to replace my existing phone is 179.99. Been a customer for 15 years and this is what I get because my phones are over 1 year old. Again, they know it is not the comsumers issue, it's theirs. How bad is that?

Its the batteries. If you tap your phone in the right spot, it will die. Its not the firmware its the OEM battery. You can buy a third party replacement on ebay for $1 + $5 shipping. If you take it back to verizon they will just give you a new phone with the same OEM batteries. I switched out my battery and my phone hasnt shut off since. for 6 bucks, id do it.

After reading this thread, I took my phone to the Verizon Wireless store. Turns out I'd already had the most up-to-date software so that wasn't the culprit. Without question, the tech just switched me out to a brand-new battery and two days later my phone hasn't shut off by itself even once. I have no idea why my battery was acting all wonky as it was the original LG battery that had come with the phone six months ago and I'd never once let it run all the way down, but it does seem to have been the source of the problem. So to anyone else having this issue, I recommend starting with taking your phone to a Verizon Wireless store and having them give you a new battery. It doesn't cost anything but your time and worked out well for me.

I didn't know that others were having this same problem. I have been getting more and more agrivated over the phone randomly shutting off. Today the phone rang and as I tried to answer it, it shut off. By the time I got it up and running again it didn't know who had called, but there was a voice mail. I have had the Verizon update (yes it's 45 minutes) and now I agree it must be the battery.

First, does the phone work fine when you have it plugged into the charger? If so, then you have a battery issue. This is my second en-V. (The first one I tried to teach it to swim...my bad) Both phones worked fine, but my second one, after 11 months of use would only stay on 20 seconds or so before it shut off. Drove me batty until I figured out I could use it with the charger. I cleaned the contacts as BuckIA suggested and it's worked fine ever since. If that didn't work, I was going to try a new battery.

I am on Env # 5 and had the same problem on all of them, random shut offs. Verizon is sending a new one. I am sure I will be calling Verizon in a month or so to replace that one too. This is the worst phone ever. My wife went through 3 Env's and then switched to a lower cost Samsong. Works fine. This will be my last LG phone ever.

I was told that the phone has such a big memory, that the phone neds shut off dailey to regroup. Only for a few seconds. Now it didn't make mine stop, but it got less frequent. I love the phone if I could just get it to work..

My verion envy phone turns off randomly now wont turn back on

Its not the battery. My VX9900 shuts off randomly (powercycles) when Im using the IM app., and has recently started doing it with direct texting. Searching around the web I discovered its a fairly common issue with the VX9900. It turns out theres a firmware upgrade available that fixes the issue and adds a few more features to the phones software. Best to just take it back to Verizon and ask for the firmware upgrade to T99VZV04. From what I understand they may need to keep the phone for a day, but ive heard of people having it done on the spot, taking about 30 min. I also understand its a no charge update. Just make sure to back up your contacts and remove the SD card! I havnt had a chance to take mine in yet, but will be asap..its getting worse and really annoying!

LG ENV2 shutting off

I just got mine a few weeks ago and it does the same exact thing (I didn't drop it, there is no water damage, I didn't understand the cause of it). I took it back to the Verizon store and I was told that the random shutting off like that is caused by having the phone outside being exposed to heat. He reset my phone back to factory settings and that did the trick for awhile (its hard for me to go to the pool and not have my phone exposed to the heat). There is no charge for them to reset the phone. Mine has started the random shutting off again back up

Make sure the battery is fully and properly charged and that you aren't accidentally pressing the power down button (End key) during these activities.
