Microwave timer works but will motor will not run/cook.

If everything works on the unit, but you do not receive any heat or possibly the turntable does not turn you have a faulty magnetron (controls heat) and a faulty motor (controls turntable). You would require service on the unit, if parts are available. Some microwaves are so small in cubic foot size, that manufacturer's do not have parts available for purchase/repairs.

Microwave lights, clock, and everything works except when you press start, it just counts down like its cooking, but the microwave is actually not on. No hum as usual or plate rotating. It just counts...

Hi, one of the most common reasons why the turntable won't rotate is that the microwave isn't clean. The turntable guide and carousel can get sticky, preventing the turntable from properly moving. If you have built-on food particles or liquids, fill a bowl with 2 or 3 cups of water and 1 tsp. of liquid detergent and lemon. Run the microwave for about 3 minutes. Clean the microwave with a cloth, including the base of the turntable, guide, carousel grooves and microwave base. Your microwave turntable won't rotate if the grooves on the base of the turntable do not sit right on the carousel. Also, check the position of the turntable guide. Place the guide directly under the turntable. Remove the turntable, and then reposition it into the carousel grooves.
Motor The carousel motor is located beneath the base plate of the microwave. If the carousel isn't turning at all, check the motor. Disconnect the microwave from the power source, and remove the turntable, guide and base plate. Try turning the motor to see if it's just stuck. If it doesn't turn freely after a few seconds, examine the motor to see if it's burned out or corroded. Use an ohmmeter to see if the motor has continuity. If not, you must replace the motor.
Bushings The drive bushings are plastic components that sit underneath the cooking plate. Remove the plate, and examine the bushings. Use a magnifying glass if necessary to see if any debris is caught in the plastic. Clean the bushings, and reinsert the plate. Turn the microwave on to see if it rotates. If the bushings are extremely worn or if some of the plastic is broken off, you need to replace it, which is a complicated repair for consumers. Contact a service technician for assistance.

Everything seems to work fine until you hit the start button than nothing happens except the timer starts counting down

If everything appears to be working normally, as you say the timer counts down, the light comes on, turntable rotates etc. then the problem will be linked to the magnetron not operating & not heating the food. This could be just a thermal fuse device which may have gone faulty but if it is a magnetron fault then the cost of getting this replaced can be expensive & it might be more economical to buy a new microwave. I would advise taking it to a local repair centre, one which gives free estimates to get a quote on a price.

GE microwave oven

Does the turntable rotate? If everything but this works (except no heat), you probably have a bad door switch. Here's a discussion of what's involved in replacing it: http://www.fixya.com/support/t267796-kenmore_microwave_hood_combination_over

If the turntable does rotate, I'd suspect a more significant failure, such as the transformer, capacitor, or magnetron. If it's any of these, it's time to replace the unit.
