I require the instruction manual for the Philips Pye Unicam UV/VIS Single Beam Spectrophotometer PU8600 & SP6 Series. My instrument is giving me an E 42 read, I have no idea what this means.

You really need a circuit diagram for fault finding.

Equipment using thermionic valves mostly had no protection against overheating.

Most of the components used in such circuitry are very stable but the voltages are much higher than we are used to today and some fairly high value capacitors are usual in valve or tube circuits and these are usually highly stressed and will lose condition if the equipment isn't in regular use and are liable to failure.

Precision instruments such as this require stable voltages for predictable performance and accurate measurements and so is likely to incorporate some sort of regulator or stabilising circuitry. This was made in the days before zener diodes and regulator chips. A valve-based voltage stabiliser can be very complex and repair is a specialist job.

Good valve equipment was usually very well protected by a number of fuses.

Have you contacted the Pye museum yet to ask for copies of any literature they might have...

May be that your deuterium lamp for UV or possibly tungsten lamp is out or misaligned. Ran into something similar several years ago. The UV lamp initially ignited but shut down a short time later ( less than a minute) since there was not enough intensity being detected. The error message was similar.
