I have a Dell Dimension 4600C with a CD Rom drive. I just got the WIndows 2007 package to install, and it came on a DVD. Is there any way I can tie in a laptop with a DVD drive to my computer so I don't have to buy and install a new DVD drive?
Hi,
Sorry to dissappoint you , but this not a possiblity. What you can to instead is copy the content of the DVD into a USB flash drive , and plugin the flash drive to your 4600c and install it from there.
A normal DVD reader writer drive , retails for not more that 65$ , so you can buy one two, more over local computer stores also keep refurbished drives, that you can get a good deal on.

those are the basic drivers for all cd. dvd, and rw drives. if you are trying to use the drive to burn a cd/dvd you need to purchase software for it your download a free burning software from filehippo.com called xpburner or burnerxp i cant recall the exact name
try other known good windows installer. if it boot, then the problem is in xp installer, if it not. try other external cd-rom drive. also be sure the disc rom drive are dvd rom drive because a cd rom drive cannot read dvd disc but a dvd rom drive can read cd rom disc installer
You'll probably have a hard time finding a DVD burner that would fit in your laptop as it's kinda old. I would suggest checking out the external dvd burners. Here are a few to check out.
You can download the drivers from dell website, download.com, and many other sites. Download, then double click on them to install them. Once installed, reset pc.
You might have to go to the BIOS of your computer to ensure your drive is recognised. Once it shows there, make sure you change the Drive as your first boot device.

You cannot plug an IDE ribbon in the floppy slot (port). The total IDE drives you can install is four (4). But check your jumper configuration. The DVD & DVD/CD-ROM cannot have the same jumper configuration to share the same IDE slot. One has to be MASTER (MS) and the other SLAVE (SL). Or you may put both drives on CABLE SELECT (CS).
O.k. so I gather your trying to reinstall windows. There's a few possible solutions the first of which is to reseat all connections checking for dust or anything else which might be between the connections. Second is to check your bios (by hitting usually f1,f2,f10,f11, or delete or esc keys) and making sure its set to boot from your cd\dvd rom. Also make sure your cd\dvd isn't scratched or dirty. If those fail try another CD\DVD rom drive to make sure it is the drive that has the issue. Don't be so quick to trash good hardware ;) good luck
You will need to connect to cables.1 is from the power supply and one is from motherboard.Just connect both to the ROM and start the computer.Windows will automatically install the drivers for your ROM..
