Search for "converting avi to DVD format" in Google, you will find a number of software that will do this for you (someare free). Here's one that is at the top of the search list for you to try out ... http://www.winavi.com/avi-to-dvd.htm.
The video files your particular camera makes should be AVI format. What media player are you using? I've heard of problems playing AVI files with Windows Media Player.
Try using a different media player like VLC or Winamp. There are also video format conversion programs out there for free. I use anyvideoconverter for that. You can get all of those programs from cnet.com's download center.

Video thumbnails are often created on digital video cameras and digital cameras that record video; THM files may or may not be transferred to the computer depending on what software is used to import the video; each THM file shares the same filename as the video clip it represents, i.e. "clip001.avi" and clip001.thm."
You need video editing software to copy .avi files to. XP and Vista have that onboard. Either direct the data to it or import the data from the individual program. If that does not work, then you have a transfer problem between Camera and PC. Try a card reader, that will prove it.
They are AVI's, it's just that there filename begins with MVI. If you can view there filename extensions, you'll see ".avi". The problem you're experiencing is that Canon videos use the MJPEG codec video compression scheme. This codec comes with Windows XP and better, but is not a default for Windows 98 or earlier.
Before going out on the web looking for MJPEG codecs, would first ask if you have installed the software disk that came with your camera? If not, get out the disk and do so, it should install the needed codec on your computer. But if this doesn't work for you, here's some suggestions from other people with the same problem:
