to save time, I would suggest switching calculators and also recommend using an online scientific calculator to reach your goal. If the manual for your device is bad, you can look into getting a new calculator. Thank you.
There is a misconception that fraction are less correct than decimal result. Quite the contrary. Calculations with fractions and/or with radicals are exact while decimal calculations are approximate. Anyway, you want decimals and so decimals you will have. When a result is displayed in fraction or radical (root form), just press the [SD] key and it will give you the so desired decimal representation. If somehow you cannot stand the sight of a fraction or a radical, just tell your calculator so. Press [SHIFT] [MODE] to open (SetUp) screen and press [2:LineIO]
If the calculator is in the MthIO mode it will always attempt to display the result as a fraction. To convert a single result to decimal, press SD. To have the result always come out in decimal (according to the selected display mode), press SHIFT MODE 2 to select the LineIO mode.
Sorry to disappoint you but you cannot do it due to the fact that the representation of irrational (SQRT(2), ..) and transcendental (e, pi, etc.) numbers on a calculator or even a computer is approximative : a number like sqrt(2) has an infinite number of decimal digits while the number of internal digits a calculator uses to store results is limited (10, 12, 15 or even 24). Once an irrational or a transcendental number has been evaluated numerically it generally ceases to be exact.
If you want to manipulate algebraic expressions, you need a calculator that has a CAS (computer algebra system) operating system and a symbolic algebra option.
Some exemples of calculators with a CAS are The TI nspire CAS, the HP 48 series, HP 49, HP 50, Casio ClassPad3xx, the TI 89titatium, the TI Voyager 200PLT, the TI 92 and Ti 92Plus. The ones with a fullblown keyboard might not be accepted on certain standardized test.
You may also try to get some emulators on the Internet for the HPs or the TI 8xx and play with them on the computer.
Hello,
To convert fractions to decimals or decimals to fractions, you use the [S<->D] key. Each time you press the key the result is displayed in the other format.
Alternatively, If you multiply or divide two integer numbers put a decimal mark at the end of one of the numbers (any one). The result will be displayed in decimal format.
Press the S<>D key, (located right above "DEL"). This will shift the answer from fraction to decimal. This sounds like a pain but having both functions available can be a big plus.
