Brand new Garmin Nuvi 1490 T out of the box. How do I charge it? The only devices in box were a car charger (my commute is 5 minutes daily) and a USB connector? Should I just plug the USB into my computer? All I see is a white screen with GARMIN on it. How do I know it is charging? For how long? How often should I charge the Garmin?\r\nBob

Garmin satnavs come with a charge out of the box.
In some cases your device may have lost a charge during shelf life. In this case you can charge these units in three ways:

  1. Place unit on computer with USB cable for approximately 8-12 hours
  2. Place unit on Garmin specified AC adaptor for approximately 4-6 hours
  3. Place unit on 12V vehicle adaptor for approximately 4-6 hours.
Some cars continue to supply power to the cigarette lighter socket when turned off and others don't. If yours doesn't you can charge it from your computer. There's no indicator to show that it's charging or when it's charged. However when you disconnect the satnav from the computer and turn it on there's a battery state indicator which shows if it's fully charged or not.

New out of the box Garmin 1490t will not acquire satellite... now what?

  • jkrikler Sep 14, 2010

having same issue... fully charged but when taken outside only shows first signal bar as red. gps not normally a problem (use my phone gps all the time - htc hd2)

  • jkrikler Sep 15, 2010

chettm4645 - i took my device outside for a long time (left it in car while popping to friends - safe enough during massive thunderstorm!) - about 10-20mins and it finally worked!

seems ok now... already registered and updated maps (took hours even with 20MB broadband - be warned!)

Garmin charger has red light on and wont charge

mine too. Its brand new. Worked OK in my car for a couple of small trips, and unfortunately I didn't notice the lights status on the charger. Then lost satellite reception (not being charged at the time). Now red light on car charger and kept turning off/won't turn on. I have an old mains charger from garmin 660 which has a malfunctioning antenna and this 1490 was meant to replace ! Its charging now anddoes turn on, but no answer yet I'm afraid. I intend to register it with garmin and log a call with them. Also looking at the manual, it says there is a fuse in the head of the charger which should be checked. I haven't done this yet, but not sure if red light would be on if fuse had blown ?

Nuvi 260w no power.

Yes, you need to charge it. USE the charger that came with it for best results. Some off brand chargers will NOT work.
You plugged it into your car and nothing? Even if the batteries are bad it should still work. Is it the Garmin charger?
