Philips Mini Stereo
Model No. FWM575/37
Unit is only a few years old and rarely used.
The CD unit will not play any CD's.
The unit only reads "reading CD" and never plays.
I get the same message with or without any CD's in the player.
Tuner and tape player are working fine.

how old is the unit??? LASER OPTICALS do have a life time (hours) specially DVD OPTICALS they tend to were out faster then CD optical since they demand more output than a CD reading, pleas give more info model, year of purchase and use...
i have been servicing car audio for 20 years if the lens is god driven then its probably your lens have you ever had i hand cleaned? by a service pro start there if it still plays up then the take up rollers or latch tray are damaged and the unit will have to be replaced ..... there is only 1 way to tell if a lens is any good you have to use a special lazer disc was this used when tested
All you can do is get a lens cleaner and hope that clears it up, otherwise you are looking at what might be an expensive replacement of the CD/lens/laser unit.
First, you should never use commercial cleaners on CDs or cassette heads. They can create more problems than cures.
Unit may have bad disk motor or optical pick-up
Reading the instruction manual - yes, life experience has taught me some really useful stuff! -
Under 'Discs for recording' on page 7 it says at end of section
IMPORTANT:
To ensure proper working of the set we recommend the use of PHILIPS audio CDR and audio CDRW discs only'
Roughly translated I read this to me - 'don't blame us if the set don't work using other (non-compatible) discs' !!
