MITSUBISHI VS-50801 50" TV

When i turn on my mitsubishi vs-50801 it comes on with a distorted picture, the sides of the picture curve to the center, a little like a distortion mirror at a carnival, it plays for 5 to 30 minutes, then shuts down but still has sound, it tries to come back on, but shuts picture down and will not come back. What may be the problem, and is it worth the cost of repair?

Bad convergence IC possible - It's cheap if you do it your self, expensive if you take it to a repair shop. My Toshiba finally came on and stayed on after the IC's burned completely up and smoke poured out the back. Then mine stayed on with a distorted image. A good place for parts -> http://www.electronix.com/catalog/default.php/cPath/6

It's on the motherboard of the tv in a horizontal fashion usually with heatsinks attached - you might might acquire the help of a skilled soldering person if you are unfamiliar with this. There shouldn't be any high voltage in this area but still use caution if you work on it.

Mitsubishi VS-55609 distorted Picture Flickers

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs. To get fixed either call in a local TV repair company or goto sites such as Tv Repair Kits to get a repair kit with instructions. Here is there link.

They have put together complete kits for most models that include the parts, step by step photo instructions, repair assistance, etc.

This is a convergence problem and not really a DIY Many amateurs try it to save money but end up spending more on it than a professional. There are dozens on here that managed to fix it for a day or two only to have it fail again.

cost of fix about $300.
