Trouble shooting the DJP unit.
Well, any multimeter that can read voltages will work. We normally just replace it, as it is easier, quicker, and cheaper than us spending an hour testing the voltage of each pin on the IC. You will need a service manual for the unit, in order to get the voltage rating for each pin of that particular IC (IC101). We'll just replace it, as part of the maintenance procedure. We'll also replace IC103 and IC108, which are both OPAMPS, and also cause play/read issues.
It's kind of like giving your car a tune up... you replace all the belts, spark plugs, cables, etc, whether or not it needs it. It's just a good idea to replace all the items that may go bad shortly. Another part we'll replace is the Stepping Motor and Loading Motor. As I said, all part of the 'tune up' for these units.
In your particular case, you'll have to look at IC101, IC103, and IC108 - all likely suspects, in addition to the other components I specified.
Sorry, there is no easier method.
