Check to see if the presser foot is loose
check to see if the needle is in backwards
if the presser foot is tight & needle is not in backwards then it could be a timming problem, since you said the needle is hitting the presser foot
please rate this with the thumbs in upper right hand corner
so how would I adjust the timing? Is it the loopers?
sometimes spools or even cone thread have notches that can catch the thread when your using a serger, check the spool & even check the cone thread for notches that can grab the thread, I've had it happen to me when using my serger, also make sure that the thread is not catching on any part of the serger where the right needle is concerned,,cause if the thread get caught anywhere it will put tension on the needle & break it,, but if it's a timming issue then you need to have it serviced because when 1 timimng is off then chances are several other timmings could be off & the service tech will have the right gauges that are needed to check & adjust the timming.
