Amazon Kindle 2 Logo
Anonymous Posted on Aug 08, 2010

My Kindle 2 has a partially frozen screen. I had in my bad for the majority of the day yesterday and when I went to take it out and turn it on the screen saver flashed and the froze on the upper right corner. Now the frozen screen saver is constantly on the right side and the rest of the screen on the right side is grayed out and/or blank. The rest of the screen seems to be ok and I'm still able to nagivate (turn pages, select books etc). I charged it for 6 hours last night and no difference. I also tried holding the power button for 15 seconds to reset the Kindle and still no change. Is this a lost cause? And if so, if I contact Amazon will they replace it? I was given the Kindle as a birthday present in May and it's only August!

SOURCE: How to set shortcut or hotkey in amazon Kindle

Hey there
I think you might find this one useful
● Home button (bottom row of keyboard) – Return to Home menu
● Shift Alt R – Reboot the Kindle
● Shift Alt . (period) – Restart just the GUI (graphical user interface)
● Shift Alt G – Grab a screenshot. Screenshots can only be stored on an SD card. A .gif image file will be saved to the SD card.

● Shift SYM – Start a demo. Needs a special demo script on the SD card.
Home
● Shift Alt M – Play Minesweeper
● Alt Z – Rescan your Kindle for pictures
● Alt T – Show the time
● Number Keys – Jump to that page of your Home menu (1 to jump to page 1, 2 for page 2, etc.)

If your Home menu is sorted by book name or author, start typing the name or author and the Kindle will jump to it.
While you’re reading
● Alt B – Set a bookmark or clear a bookmark previously set here
● Alt T – Display the time
● Alt 0 – Enable or disable a slideshow
● Alt 1 – Start the slideshow
● Alt 2 – Stop the slidehow
● Alt Next Page / Previous Page – Go to the next (or previous) annotation, or 5% forward (or backward)

Settings
● 411 – Run a diagnostics test and display technical information about your Kindle
● 511 – Run a loopback call test
● 611 – Perform a diagnostic data service call

Font List
● J – Show or hide justification options (left or full justification)
Picture Viewer
● Shift Alt 0 – Set the current picture as your screen saver.
● F – Make the current picture full-screen

Minesweeper
● I – Move up
● J – Move left
● K – Move down
● L – Move right
● M – Mark a mine
● R – Restart with a new game
● Space – Open the current cell
● Select wheel – Move the cursor up and down

● Alt Backspace – Clear all text typed so far

● Alt 7 – Type a , (comma)
● Alt 8 – Type a : (colon)
● Alt 9 – Type a ” (double-quote)
● Alt 0 – Type a ‘ (apostrophe)

Browser
● Alt 1 – Go to current location in Google Maps. This attempts to locate you by triangulating your location against nearby cell phone towers. Note that this doesn’t always find the correct location, and displays “NOT AVAIL, NOT AVAIL” as your location (or an incorrect address). You may be able to fix this by pressing Shift Alt R to reboot your Kindle.
● Alt 2 – Find nearby gas stations
● Alt 3 – Find nearby restaurants
● Alt 5 – Find whatever you type in nearby

SOURCE: how to unfreeze kindle screen? my kindle screen has froze

Hey

Well there are a lot of reasons why the Kindle screen freeze.

most of the times it happens when the Kindle is trying to upload some big files like photos, movies, flash etc. in this case all you have to do it to wait and it will un-freeze in couple of seconds.

Another Very common is that the Kindle Memory is full and he can't respond until some of the memory gets free, this usually will happen once you click too many times on the screen, the poor Kindle is overwhelmed with orders and doesn't know what to do, this happens to "newbies" with the kindle.

A lot of these freezing problems can be fixed by resting your Kindle, you can do a Soft reset press the Alt-Shift-R keys at the same time. (Shift is the one that looks like an up arrow.) If that doesn't work, plug your Kindle into the charger and try again.

You can also do a Hard Reset take the cover off the back and insert a paperclip in the little hole. Hold for 10 seconds, you may need to try again with the Kindle plugged into the cradle.

For the Kindle DX Hold the top on/off switch sliding it to the left and keep to the left, hold for 60-80 Sec, Release it. Wait a minute - the DX will flash. Then the screen will go black and then the main Kindle screen (the guy sitting under the tree) will appear and the start up thermometer bar. Once that's completed, the main menu will come on, and your books will be rstored in batches over the next couple of minutes

And of course you can always Call Amazon Customer Service at 1-866-321-8851, 6a-10p PST, 7 days a week

Hope this will be helpful

Do not remove the back cover, there are no user serviceable parts inside. Instead:

  • Make sure the Kindle's battery is charged. Connect to a PC using the supplied USB cable until the power LED changes colour from amber to green.
  • Slide and hold the power button until after the power LED blinks three times. If the screen now is blank, repeat the procedure
If the Kindle still does not come back to life, contact Kindle Support.

Your husband switched the device off. If you give the power switch a short nudge only, it goes in and out of "stand-by" mode, it is not really switched off.

Try to slide and hold the power switch again, until after the power light blinks three times. Should happe after ~5 seconds of holding. The Kindle should restart now --- takes about a minute, but you will see a progress bar to keep you happy during the delay.

Kindle locked up and now can't get it to turn on.

I have the same problem. The screen saver is partially frozen on the screen on the upper right corner and then blank down the rest of the right side. The rest of the screen is readable and I'm able navigate (turn pages, select different books, etc).
