This is the problem with optiarc drives. I suggest you buy an original Sony drive the next time. Hope the problem is mainly with CDs.

@wagonervboat

If your CD/DVD Drive is missing under My Computer, try the following:

1. Click Start > then type regedit then press enter
2. Double click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3. Double click on SYSTEM
4. Double click on CurrentControlSet
5. Double click on Control
6. Double click on Class and look for {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and click on it.
7. On the right side, look for the keys Upper Filter and/or Lower Filter
8. Right click on it, delete it and reboot

Microsoft created this fix when they found out that it's beginning to be a known issue. If this won't work for you, your CD/DVD drive's read lens must have worn out already and you need to replace your ODD.

Good luck.

Windows vista updated and now my optiarc dvd rw drive won't work

You will have to uninstall the drive and reinstall again. I think the drivers for the drive is not properly installed. But if all this does not work, then I think you will have to do a system restore.

Best wishes
