It sounds like the camshaft timing is off. Did you have some marks to match up when you put in the new camshaft?

I would like to know the proper way to time the camshaft gear with the crankshaft gear - John Deere Model 445

  • Anonymous Aug 14, 2010

If I take a compression on the two cylinders, if it is 100psi (I am not sure what the compression is) would that be sufficient enought to make sure the valves are OK. What happens when I remove the camshaft and rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees?

Of the 100+ camshaft replacements that I personly have done on the 425/445 and John Deere Gators I have come across 3 that backfired when completing the replacement.2 were do to bent valves coming in contact with the piston after gear failed and 1 was from a sheared flywheel key.The only other time I had this same injected engine backfire was on a John Deere gator 620i that had a faulty computer and fired @ 90 derees off.Do a compresion check and that will help out alot.

USE A DIAL INDICATOR ON INTAKE VALVE AND A TIMING WHEEL ON CAMSHAFT. After learning how and why to use these you will find out 2 things: intake valve is burned/not burned and/or 2) valve is opening too soon thereby letting combustible charge leak back into carb and fire when plug fires. Good Luck derfly

John Deere Model 445 garden tractor. Replaced plastic cam shaft gear, tried to start motor and it backfires through carb. I just removed front cover of engine to check the timing marks on both the camshaft...

Hi

Please check for the anti back fire solenoid in the front of the carb. Check whether the wiring to it is fine and if it is getting +12 V. If yes then you maybe required to replace the solenod.
However, if this doesn't resolve the issue then you would need to adjust manually so that decompresser works normally. Inspect the flywheel key as well, it may have sheared.

Check the carb filter and the make sure there is no sign of water in/around the carbeurater. Hope this helps... If it does please do not forget to accept the solution or post back for assistance.

JD Model 445 - Plastic gears. After replacing the new camshaft I need to adjust the valves. Does anyone have the specifications?

Remove the plugs. Turn the engine so the pistion is at top dead center for cylinder. Clearance should 0.010 when adjusting rocker to valve. Repeat for other side. I just replaced my cam shaft if a 1993 JD445. I'm planning to run for a couple of hours then check cleanace again. Hope this helps, Gerry
