My dvd drive is not recognized by Device Manager/My Computer. Best Buy replaced it, but it's still not working, and I'd rather not have them take it in for another 3 weeks. It still opens/spins, it just doesn't work. I've tried the upper/lower registry fix, all the Windows fixes. Thoughts?

NO MEDIA stated , CD, DVD, Blueray, DVD-r, CD-R, what?
the acid test if it plays DVDs is to use a real store bought DVD movie , that must play, does it? and see the files on it?

The 1millionth post here, with NO OS stated
windows , right? and what version?
click control panel, click system behold version and 32/64 bits.
vista or XP. both are bad news.
XP is dead now, XP cant get MS. PnP drivers now, from mS
they took all that off line 4 years ago, time to upgrade the OS.

here is what it can be: a list.
did the pc get upgraded or downgraded? Windows
Did the HDD get replaced ever?
This PC is only 11 years old , and HP still supports it.
amazing luck there, no?
It came new with Vista 32 or 64 bit, (microsoft ended sport last year)_
so is it still running VISTA, or w7, w8 or w10 via upgrades
(wise to do)

vista 32 bit drivers are here.

load all those but never mess with BIOS. there.
just drivers.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-dv6700-entertainment-notebook-pc-series/3632100/model/3650960

now why it fails, a large list of possible
1: some one up graded it and messed up the drivers.
2: virus infections
3: the drive is bad or needs cleaning,(optics)
4: the HP driver are missing, for it.
5: Disk you are using is bad, or not supported with that optical drive,
5: sure if device manager says its dead, missing red marks or yellow marks or flagged as unknown, the drive is bad or the driver,
drive = harware
Driver = software matching above and the OS unstated by you.

best-buy replaced what, the disk drive optical?

if the PC still has good HDD
power on, and hammer F11 this puts the pc back to day one settings , Vista
and all data lost, and all added Applications gone.

if you had told the OS and told what the label on the DVD drive
says, then a match can be easy but alas you did not.

they must match.

did you right click the DVD drive, and pick update yet?
it will look on local HDD for a driver,
then if missing go to MS and fail , (the pulled the plug there)
leaving only HP support. above,

Allan Cate

WoW, that one is a good one.
If you are using Windows OS go to device manager, hardware, uninstall or remove device (DVD player).
Turn off the computer HARD BOOT/Cold Boot, not just reboot.
Start the computer and it should find your DVD add the drivers and install them. That should do it.
NOT all Windows versions are exactly the same, but, once you get to the device manager you should find remove/add devices.
Good Luck

Restore point will not work, and none of the software programs I have will recognize the DVD drive, so i can burn a DVD. They only recognize the Cd drive.

Have you made any recent hardware changes to your PC?

First check device manager by right clicking on My Computer and then properties. If using Vista or Windows 7 device manager should appear on the left side. If in XP or earlier click the hardware tab and then device manager. Find your dvd drive in the listing and make sure there are no errors present for the device. Go to the devices manufacturers website and download the lastest drivers. Install and reboot.

If the device does not appear in device manager and installing drivers did not fix it, the device may have become unplugged or may not be installed properly.

My computer no longer "sees"

hello
at end of this instruction set, see link to review more questions/answers,as your issue with CD/DVD ROM will vary .

This document applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers with Windows XP, Me, and 98. Use this document to make Windows and the CD writing software recognize the CD or DVD writer drive. Start at Step 1; do not skip to other sections until Step 1 has been completed. Step 1: Does Windows detect the CD or DVD drive? Use Device Manager to determine if Windows is recognizing the drive:
  1. In Windows XP, click Start , and right-click My Computer . In Windows 98 and Me, right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. In Windows XP, select Properties , click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button. In Windows 98 and Me, select Properties , and click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Click the plus sign (+ ) next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives (or similar) category.
  4. Do the following depending on what is listed in the DVD/CD-ROM drives category:
    • If the CD or DVD drive name is missing , the drive is not being detected by Windows. Close Device Manager and skip to the section CD or DVD drive is not recognized by Windows .
    • If a drive name is shown but is disabled (icon is marked with a red X, c00877300.gif ), the drive has been disabled. Right-click the drive name and select Enable . You may have to restart the computer to complete the enabling process. The drive should work correctly once it has been enabled. NOTE: If the drive cannot be enabled, a required service or driver that the drive needs is not functioning or has been disabled. Click the plus sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and troubleshoot any problems found according to any error codes in Device Manager. Resetting the BIOS may also resolve this problem.
    • If a drive name is shown but contains an alert icon (an icon marked with an alert symbol, c00877301.gif ), then use the section Using Device Manager error codes to troubleshoot the problem. You may also use the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive to reset the drive configuration.
    • If the CD or DVD drive is listed as normal but your disc burning software does not recognize the drive, Device Manager shows no special icons c00877302.gif . Windows is detecting the drive but the writing software does not. Leave Device Manager open and continue with the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive .

My computer will not recognize my cd/dvd drive, there are no optical drives listed in device manager

In the optical drives or ATAPI drives section of Device Manager, try right clicking and choosing "scan for hardware changes." If the CD/DVD drive still doesn't show up, you might want to try opening the computer up and resetting the cables going to the drive (both the power and data cables).

The drive was working before, right?

DVD doesn't open

This problem may be a bad cd/dvd drive. When the computer boots up, go into the BIOS setup. Check to see if the computer recognizes the drive, and make sure it is not disabled. Next, check in the "device manager" to see if there are any yellow question marks or red X's. This might indicate a driver problem, or a misconfigured drive. If these steps fail to resolve your problem, replacing the drive would be your next step. This is a fairly easy task, and worth the time to research the steps for your particular model.
