Alessi Electric kettle

The switch will not stay on. As soon as it's engaged it turns itself off and has to be manually held on in order for the water to boil

  • Anonymous Apr 25, 2009

My main problem is the switch won't stay on after lifting the lever. The light only comes on when the kettle is held firmly down or/and turned around its base. Cause is poor contact in a number of possible places which can be solved by sanding the contact points. Another problem is not switching off after water has reached boiling point. Cause in my case was a rusting metal thermo-spring plate (looks like a very thin washer) at one end of the plastic tube that works the cut-out mechanism. Needs to be cleaned and bent slightly more to be more sensitive!

I have opened the kettle four times to rectify the above problems, but the first problem keeps recurring which suggests a design fault. This is unacceptable for an expensive kettle only 2 years old. Putting back the kettle base components is quite fiddly and the switch lever has become brittle and can easily break in the process.

I am looking to replace the whole of the black coloured unit that controls the switching etc. Does anyone know where to find one? Alessi's official UK distributer is utterly useless and am trying to contact someone in Italy.

I have a similar problem with an Alessi kettle not staying on without a lot of pressure or turning around its base.

The switch is most likely defective and has to be changed. It is also possible that the heating element is pulling too much current and also has to be changed.

An appliance service tech would have the tools to test the kettle and determine the exact fault.

Jerry Greenberg - I like your answers re: Alessi Electric kettle, so I have one for you. I have the electric Alessi MG32 and it stopped working. We think it is just a fuse. The switch goes on, but not the red light or heat. I changed outlets and it worked one more time, then stopped permanently. How do I go about changing the fuse? Is it in the base or in the head of the plug? This has been a great product that I refuse to put into landfill. If I can save it, I'd be grateful. Any advice you have would be great! Katie D.

My daughter bought me an Alessi cordless kettle for Christmas 2008. After 9 months it simply stopped heating water! The red light was lit on the base, so we knew the fuse hadn't gone, but it was completely...

Have you tried using it on a different socket outlet ? Possibly there is a problem with the wiring at this socket.
If the electricity supply "trips" at the consumer unit it is either the RCD which trips due to e.g. the base of the kettle becoming wet or alternatively the MCB tripping due to an overload which shouldn't happen unless there is a fault in the kettle.
When you got a replacement kettle presumably they replaced the base also?

How do you remove the pitch pipes?

Don't you love the sound of the Sapper Kettle?

Alessi refers to these as the E & B Pitch Pipes. Over time, impurities in the tap water corrode the internal reed whistle, and always the low pitched one first. Here's a tip: Once replaced, avoid overfilling the kettle to the top, causing boiling and water to spill though the pipes. The water might contain impurities, but the steam doesn't. This should help keep the pipes in working order for many years. We've had our Sapper kettle for 30 years.

I have found the best way to remove the old whistles is with the thick end of a Chop Stick. The soft wood worn't scratch the metal. Insert chopstick from the bottom and tap to drive them up and out from the top.

I get my replacement Pitch Pipes at the San Francisco Alessi store: Part 12701. Cost: approximately $16. (415) 434-0403 [email protected]

Hope this helps.

Kettle will not stay on

Sounds like the switch is weight sensitive. A safety feature to prevent overheat as contents run low? The baseplate is probably not moving freely enough to move accordingly.
