My dvd/cd drive recognises original cds, will burn to new blank dvd's but wont read in any way disc's that have been burned so wont allow me to erase and rewrite on my rewritable discs. it's NTI cd & dvd maker 7 that accompanied my acer aspire desktop

Are you able to read CD's and DVD's using the Optical Drive ?If yes, then it may be a problem with the lens in the drive.It can also be an issue with the software that you are using to burn Cd's ( like Nero ).If you are not able to Read and write Cd's or DVD's and the Optical drive isnot listed in " My Computer" then it can be either a driver issue or registry filters issue.Let me know abt this
Is your DVD drive a Combo DVD ROM and CD Read/writer? If so it cannot burn DVD only reads DVDs and read and burn CDs.
If the program cannot find a DVD burner then either the burning software cannot support that model DVD burner ot the DVD burner is faulty.
To test the DVD burner, remove it and install it into another computer to test the burner to see if is faulty.
This problem is normal and exists with many CD/DVD drives. On some of the drives, if you put in blank discs and try to open the disc in My Computer or Windows Explorer, Windows displays no contents or a blank disc. Whereas on other drives, you get the error message that you mentioned about incorrect function.
What software are you using to burn CDs or DVDs? Are you able to burn CDs but not DVDs or you can't burn both the discs? Did you try a CDs with a different make/manufacturer? Some drives refuse on some disc makes. Try another disc and another writing speed, or try the lowest writing speed available with your software.
Its only cd writer burner and can only that it can read dvd disc also. That is why its called combo. But burning blank dvd it can't. But if you want buy some dvdburner too.
Have you checked device manager to see if you have a yellow checkmark on your DVD./CD drives? if ok, sounds to me like the maker of the LH-20A1l BLO5 either needs to fix your problem or replace it. The Nero 7 should enable it to work correctly.
ITs a dvd rom drive. It will not burn blank dvds in order to burn, it has to cd-r/cd-rw/dvd-r/dvd-rw. If a drive cannot write to a blank disc, it will eject it. Rom drives read only (Read Only Memory), Combo drives- burn cd's only read dvd's, and super drives both read and write to cds and dvds.
