LG 42LB1DRA 42 in. LCD Television Logo
Posted on Aug 03, 2010

I have a LG LCD TV 42LB1DR-UA for 4 years and I am going on my second power supply. Last one was replaced less than 1 year ago. LG says there has been no recall but I can not see paying $200 per year to keep replacing the power supply and do not want to scrap LCD TV less than 5 years old or purchase new one. Any advice on repairing or what problem could be. Noticed other people running into same problem with same model number.

I have a LG 42 " lcd tv. Model # 42LB1DR . I had the power supply replaced a year ago and again I am having the same problem. Picture goes out and no sound. Will turn on and off but is slow to...

Based on this description alone it is not very certain what the problem is, but if I have to pick I'd have to say you have swollen capacitors in the power supply.

You can have those replaced by yourself or you can have a technician replace them for you.

In both cases, if properly done, your refurbished power supply will work WAY longer than a new one.

And it's for the simple reason that whoever repairs it should use capacitors with higher ratings that will NOT go bad within a year whereas if you buy a new (or used) power they'll do exactly that - as you have already experienced.

Look at http://blog.coppelltvrepair.com for some articles focusing on power supply problem fixing. There was one for a Samsung in the September postings I think.

There will be plenty others all over Internet too.

Or if you like it, mail your power board to us and we'll have them replaced for you. Fixed $40 plus return shipping.

(of course there's also a chance I might not be right and the problem to be somewhere else. never forget that no matter who tells you anything. diagnosing problems over internet is not much more reliable than picking a spouse on a matchmaking site)

HDD Recovery failed

I have had this problem intermittently for some time and have not found a solid solution for it yet. The HDD may be going bad or it may be a power supply or digital board problem. I just replaced the 3 bad capacitors on my power supply a few months ago, then the set started having HDD problems. As of now when I want to record, I have to unplug the AC power for a few seconds to get the relays to reset, then the HDD will start and be readable until the next power cycle. Sometimes I have to leave the unit unplugged until the power light goes out completely (capacitors drain) in order to get it to work. I'm still working on a final solution for this issue, but the set is a 2-man lift and a pain to open up.

Last time I had it apart, I noticed that the SATA cable to the HDD was strained where it came off the connector on the digital board since LG used a straight cable instead of a right-angle one. I just ordered a new cable and will let you know how it goes. I also wast to put in a larger disk at some point.

This sounds like the power supply that feeds your back-light is going out. This repair should be done by a qualified technician

Insignia lcd 37''powering off and right back on by itself!

Hi Ed,
Since the TV is less then a year old and still under manufacturers warranty, I would suggest to take back to the vendor to get it fix because this LCD behavior is not going to get any better.
The failure on this TV is related to a power supply in most cases if the TV is turning OFF by itself or needs to be unplug to let cooldown and it works afterward.

LG 42 LCD no sound or picture

This is probably bad capacitors on the power supply board. My LG 42LB1DR has a known problem with this and I replaced the four bac capacitors myself and saved 5-6 hundered dollars that I was also told that it would cost to fix. I fixed for under 10 dollars and about 20 minutes. LG knows about it but they dont really want to admit it. My TV was only 26 months old when this happened. The four capacitors are made by Samxon and are 2200uf @ 10v. They are junk so even if you have the entire board replaced for say $200 its just going to happen again. They need to be replaced with a different brand.
