Dear 'magicalangel'.....to delete messages simply press and release the 'erase' button. When you see the word 'delete'...press and hold the 'erase' button once again until the word 'delete' dissapears.

on XP try the "<" circle on the system tray and look for the USB device manager, disconnect from there. If it is not there, or older systems try Start, Control Panel, System icon, Hardware Tab, Device Manager button. Find the Universal Serial Bus controllers, right click on the Device and select disable in the floating menu. that should allow you to remove the device safley.
have you tried formatting it? press erase till it flashes delete, then press and hold record for 3 seconds till it says Format, then press and hold erase till it says wait..it should fix it if that's the problem
