Have a compaq presario running win 7. The system does not recognize when it is running on ac power (original ac adapter). The battery charges but the only sign of this is the battery icon says xx% remaining (value increases). If I pull the battery once booted the icon shows being on ac power. If I reinstall the battery the ac icon changes to the battery icon and I am back to xx% remaining. The adapter will charge the battery back to 100%. If I try to boot with only AC power applied the system will not start (no lights DOA). If I pull the battery and tell the system to restart it will reboot using ac power only. Help!

I also booted this laptop using a live linux distro. The battery and power adapter were both seen an operated as they should. This is a windows problem.

Hi. Mainboard must have gone bad since its not recognizing the AC adapter and you need put the battery first and take it out upon boot up just to recognized the AC adapter. Try draining first the electrostatic energy on the motherboard since this is a board issue. Take out the battery and unplugged the power adapter. Press and hold the power button for 30 secs. Put the battery back in and plug in the adapter. Turn on the computer and observe. If same issue occurs, i suggest to contact your computer manufacturer and have the board replaced if computer is still under warranty. This is a hardware issue and not a software issue.

Have a good one!

  • Anonymous Aug 04, 2010

If it is a hardware issue why would a different OS work perfectly? Linux see's the battery and charger and icons respond as expected. This tells me it is not a hardware issue and is isolated to windows. I also see many people posting the same problem on other boards.

Hello,

the problem is obviously from the battery. The battery cell has become bad, that's why its malfunctioning.

The symptoms you are experiencing are that of a bad battery. I think its high time y replaced the battery of your laptop.

Good luck.

    Hello,

I just saw your comment now. In this case, perform a windows update, as this should put your system back in order.

Also, was everything (battery & AC Adapter) working perfectly before now? If yes, perform a system restore on your computer, this will revert your computer back to the time it was working perfectly. Restore the system to a backward date when it was working perfectly. To perform system restore go to Start menu > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

If that doesn't solve the problem, then it means you will have to reinstall windows operating system (Win Vista/XP) since the problem is a windows problem. This will definitely solve the problem.

    Take care.

I did a repair install and that did not solve the problem. I do not wish to reinstall the Os from scratch as there are many programs installed that would have to be reinstalled. I simple search from google tells me this is a common problem people are having. Everything works as it should if I boot into another OS. The problem is windows but not worth a complete reinstall.

  • Wale Sarumi KomputerSolution

    Hello,

you can try the windows update in that case. But from the look of things, reinstall OS will be the best way to solve this problem once and for all. You can back-up your files if you are afraid of loosing them.

I don't think there is any other way or method of resolving this problem since the battery and AC adpter is working well. Windows update might do the trick.

    Take care.

  • Anonymous Aug 02, 2010

System is current with all updates. I know a complete reinstall may fix the problem but that is a sledgehammer approach. Most OS problems can be solved by reformatting and reloading the complete OS but if I did that every time windows had a problem I would be reloading weekly. I am looking for a solution that does not involve the sledgehammer!

    thanks, Gary

Hi, it seem as if your battery is faulty you should try another battery to see if the computer will recognize when it is charging, you can also try your battery in another compaq presario computer to see if it will have the same problem.

  • Anonymous Aug 02, 2010

I also booted into a linux distro, the battery and ac adapter work as they should with no errors. So I am confident there is no battery problem it is a windows problem.

I had the battery not recognized on boot up. then

the Dell AC adapter has a sensing pin so the bios can determine the wattage of the adapter. If the system cannot ID the adapter, the battery charger circuit is disabled. You'll need a functional DELL ac adapter to get the battery to charge

Hp compaq nx7400 - battery died and power cord will not turn comp

Some laptops will not power up with a completely discharged or faulty battery. Remove the battery from the laptop, plug in the power cord and try to boot the system. If the system boots, your battery needs to be replaced. Replace your battery as soon as you can, it's not a good idea to run the laptop for extended periods with an open battery bay.

I have a compaq presario 700 laptop that is no longer charging.

The notebook battery may have a defect if it will not power on the notebook and if it will not hold a charge. The battery indicator light on the notebook either does not light or always blinks orange. The notebook operates correctly when connected to the AC adapter.
A battery that will not charge may be the result of an AC adapter failure, a system board failure, or a battery failure. Perform the steps below to diagnose the failure.
Troubleshoot the power supply
To verify that the AC power supply is functioning properly, follow the steps below.

1.
Plug the AC adapter directly into a functioning wall outlet, and plug connector into the computer. Do not plug into a power strip, surge protector or secondary power source.
2.
Verify the following operation and take the appropriate action:
*
That all power cord connections are secure.
If the AC adapter connection to the notebook is loose, the connector may be damaged and require repair. Contact HP service and support for further assistance.
*
That the power button or power LED is lit when the computer is on.
*
That an LED on the AC power supply adapter is lit when plugged into an AC wall outlet (not available on all AC power supply adapters).
*
That the AC power supply adapter is the correct type.
Different notebook models require different AC power supply adapters. You will need to know the Product Number of your notebook to determine the Part Number of the replacement part. Click Start > HP Help & Support to view the product name, product number, and serial number that you'll need to have to speak with HP Customer Service.
View the See Also section for information about locating HP Help & Support in your operating system.

Troubleshoot the System Board
If you've verified that the AC power functions properly, troubleshoot the PC's system board by following the steps below.

1.
Remove the battery, and keep the notebook connected to AC power.
2.
Press and release the Power button to start the computer.
*
If the notebook PC powers on , then the AC adapter and system board are functioning properly. Go to Troubleshoot the battery .
*
If the Power LED is off , then the AC power adapter needs to be replaced. Contact HP Service and Support for further assistance.
*
If the power LED is on , but the notebook PC does not power on, then the notebook PC needs to be repaired. Contact HP Service and Support for further assistance.
3.
Shut down Windows by selecting Shut Down from the Start Menu.

Troubleshoot the battery
If you have verified the AC power supply and system board are functioning correctly, troubleshoot the battery by following the steps below.

1.
Insert the battery into the battery compartment on the bottom of the notebook PC.
2.
Connect the AC power supply and allow the battery to charge for 15 to 30 minutes.
NOTE: The Battery Charging light should be on while the battery is charging. If it is not on, check the AC power adapter connection to the notebook PC.
3.
Unplug the AC power adapter cord from the notebook PC.
4.
Press and release the Power button to start the computer using only the battery as the power source.
*
If the PC does not power on, then the battery needs to be replaced. Contact HP service and support for further assistance.
*
If the notebook PC does power on, the battery is functioning properly.
NOTE: If you have purchased a second battery for your notebook PC or you have access to an identical battery, you can also check the battery by inserting the second battery into the PC and performing the Troubleshoot the battery steps again.

Battery won't charge

Hello,
This is true, you will not be able to charge the battery without the correct charger. For mostly all laptops, when the charger is not maintaining a charge, it is time for a new one. However, it does not have to be the manufacturer's adapter, but I recommend purchasing the battery made for the Compaq Presario M2000 Notebook.
NextTag.com has decent deals on these adapters. http://www.nextag.com/ac-adapter-compaq-presario-m2000/search-html

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank You, Raph30

Compaq Presario 1200 won't charge battery

dear N9YK

you can follow this

If you have a loose connection where you plug in the power on your laptop, or it works intermittently, you could have a bad dc jack. Symptoms
  • Move the power plug and the laptop loses connection
  • Broken or cracked dc jack
  • Laptop won't charge but worked on battery
  • Power LED and battery LED flicker when the adapter tip is moved
  • Battery won't charge
  • Sparks come out the back of the laptop
Why does this happen?
  • Flaw in manufacturer designs
  • Use of universal or non-original ac adapter
  • Lots of plugging and unplugging of the ac adapter
  • Tripping on or pulling the ac adapter cord
or you can check your dc amper in your adaptor

oke

Compaq Presario v2000 having problems powering on

hi!

i'd say first try a known working ac adapter and if that Working AC adapter works and the system detects the battery well, then it could be the ac. If not then try to borrow a working battery to get your final conclusion. if the working battery still doesnt work properly, then it could be the system motherboard. If battery and ac adapter (working) are not available, then check the BIOS and see if it really doesnt detect the battery. try flashing the BIOS and still if that fails, then replace the battery.

hope this helps!

Regards,

Karlox
