Hi and welcome to the site,
Initially, there is a partial test to confirm if the old/original remote is working or not. With fresh batteries, point the remote towards an active digital camera. For every press of any button on the remote, there should be a bright light that would register on the LCD screen of the camera. No light, no infrared transmission from the remote; remote faulty.
Offhand, if the original remote is functional, then the most likely suspect would be the IR receiver of the TV itself and/or its associated circuitry.
Good luck and thank you for asking.
I recommend that you trash this 6 year old non digital tv and get a new digital tv. you will be so much happier. J.

My Toshiba TV works and looks great except that the remote does not work. Any suggestions?
