My 50 inch ultravision from 1999 turns on but then it shuts off and doesn't come on after 5 seconds. I then have to unplug it and wait 10-15 seconds. then it will turn on. however it shuts off again in 5 seconds. I noticed that the green lights in the circuitboard also shut off and only 1 little diode blinks red. This is an awesome tv. I really hope i can fix it

Likely the lamp in the set has failed here which does make sense if the picture was dim before---a lot of lamps just before failing all the way dim down.
Sounds like it is stuck in hibernate mode. Hold the power button down for 5 seconds and try to start it again. If it doesn't start remove the battery, unplug the laptop, hold the power button down for 60 seconds. Now plug in the power supply but leave the battery out. Turn it on. It should start now and you can re-insert the battery.
When was the last time the projection lamp was replaced? The projection lamp on the tv now,has not been replaced like a 1 1/2 or 2 years,tv been on and watches like 4 or 5 hours a day?The tv projection lamp life are over.Require a new projection lamp.
Well, first your model number is the 42 inch, but I digress...
I had a similar problem with a Viewsonic 27 inch, with the blinking power light on a failed power-up. It turned out that replacing the power transformer was the ticket. However, as I have the 50 inch Panasonic plasma, I know that the transformer is built into the set itself. I'd still suggest that this is what needs replacing though, as this is different from a set being on but having no picture.
10 years is about life for these, booming noise like a gun shoot? i would suspect a cap blew up can you open the back and see any burn marks or paper ?
