Keeps pausing, won't charge, message about not supporting firewire?
Ok, I use this ipod for hours a day and am quite adept! Today I got a message about ipod's not supporting firewire. Strange since I'm syncing and recharging with the same old USB that I've always used. When I was out running today, the ipod kept pausing even when I had the hold button on. It would start again but within about 1 minute, it paused again. Now when I've hooked it up for syncing/recharging, it will sync but not recharge. I-tunes shows that it is synced but I never get the message that I can disconnect it. I've restarted it, restarted my computer -- all to no avail! Please help!!
Thanks for the link. The problem seemed to have fixed itself before I tried this. I restarted the computer and restarted the ipod and all seems well...Thanks for the link. Several things could keep your iPod's battery from charging. The major causes are listed below in logical order. Check each one to see if it's what's keeping your battery from charging. Low-powered USB port iPods that connect to USB ports require a high-power USB port.
Keyboards and some USB hubs will not charge iPod. Connect iPod directly to the computer or to a USB AC power adapter. Click here for more information. Connect directly to computer If you connect iPod to something that connects to the computer (like a USB hub or FireWire drive), connect iPod directly to the USB or
FireWire port on the computer. FireWire port on a Windows PC The FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports on some Windows-compatible computers may not be powered, and consequently won't charge iPod when you plug it in. Check here to see if the FireWire port on your PC can charge iPod. Your computer goes to sleep Your computer can only charge iPod when it's turned on and not asleep. Make sure your computer is on and not set to go to sleep when you want to charge iPod. Tip:
Some Macintosh computers can charge iPod even though they're asleep. If your sleeping computer doesn't charge iPod, don't worry, just wake it and let iPod charge. hope this helps
Hi, here are 3 options:
1. Give it a good charge on the computer.
2. Erase all your songs on it so it has a chance to recover
3. How do I fix my iPod if it will not turn on, turn off, or wake up?
"Your iPod Won't Turn On" from the Apple Support Site provides in-depth instructions for troubleshooting an iPod that won't turn on. Apple recommends that you:
1. Make sure the Hold switch is off
2. Make sure the battery is charged
3. Reset iPod
4. Let iPod's battery drain
5. Update iPod's software
6. Make sure iPod is the only device in your FireWire or USB chain. Disconnect everything but the mouse, keyboard, and your iPod, then see if it will turn on.
7. Make sure you are using the FireWire or USB cable that came with your iPod, and that the cable is in good condition.
8. Try connecting iPod to the built-in port of a different computer to see if that works.
"iPod Stops Responding or Won't Wake From Sleep" from the Apple Support Site notes that you need to "charge your iPod, then reset your iPod" if it won't turn off or wake up.

Until recently, iPods could charge by either USB or Firewire. Each has
a different power requirement. Many third-party docks and chargers
power the dock connect with electricity that meets the Firewire spec,
not the USB one. The newer iPods and the iPhone
only can charge by USB. Thus if you use a firewire based charger, you
get the "not supported" note. I thinkthat's what is happening to you.
This compatibility issue is caused by the same change with the Apple
Dock Connecter introduced with the iPhone 3G. Inside the iPod / iPhone
Dock Connecter are 30 metal pins. Previous iPods and iPhones allowed
for charging either over pins reserved for the USB connection or pins reserved for the obsolete Firewire connection.
While
Apple apparently announced this upcoming change to manufactures of
“Made for iPod” accessories back in 2005, Apple only formerly
discontinued Firewire charging support with the most recent iPods. New
iPods and iPhones can only charge via the USB pin.
As such, there is no way that a software update can fix this issue in the future; this is truly a modification in iPod hardware.
Hello,
First, please check your connection (I'm sure you have already done this). Make sure that the cable is plugged in and working on both ends.
If that is fine, I would recommend taking it back and getting a new one. If you just recently purchased it, you should be able to return without a problem. It sounds like you might have a defective product and you don't want to get stuck with it after the return period.
Good news is that when you get the new one, if you use iTunes, it will automatically sync up and you wont have to manually load songs.
Hope this was helpful but if you still have questions, let me know.
Have a great day
Some speaker systems which are only compatible for charging the ipod nanos and classics do not work with the iPod Touch and the iPhone, the internals are slighly different from one another which will not allow that speaker system to charge your iTouch.
To play & Charge your touch, i suggest getting a speaker system that supports the iPod touch platform.
Unfortunately, the iPod nano only ships with a USB 2.0 cable, which alienates many Mac users who only have USB 1.1 and Firewire ports. Although Apple offers no official support, you can both charge and sync your iPod nano, albeit slowly, using USB 1.1. Or, you can charge your iPod nano, but not sync, using Firewire.

Thanks for the link. The problem seemed to have fixed itself before I tried this. I restarted the computer and restarted the ipod and all seems well...
