Re: I am getting scanner error 5 massage on hp 2840
A tech needs to look at it. It could be as easy as just reseating the 4 wire bundle connector that comes off the scanner and connects to the formatter. But, in any event a tech has to check it out.

Scanner 5 error is usually caused by a failed scanner head drive motor. HP does not sell that part by itself, you must buy a new flatbed assembly. Can sometimes be caused by dirty mirrors, check my tips on cleaning the scanner on the 3380 as it is the same procedure.
Scanner Error 52 is a hardware error. If turning the power off , waiting 30 seconds and turning it back on does not solve the issue the the scanner assembly might need to be replaced. Another thing to try is make sure the printer is plugged into the wall not into a surge protector. Aside from that you may need to have the scanner assembly replaced.
This is due to a hardware failure, the scanner assembly and the formatter board will need to be replaced.
Try doing a hard or reset or nvram: 1. Turn the printer off 2. Hold down the enter and the * button 3. Reboot the printer while holding the buttons and hold until permanent storage is displayed. Let go of the buttons and wait for the ready message on the display.
I had this problem and it had to do with the scan bulb head not recognising the marker. My temporary fix until the bulb is replaced is to turn the printer off, open the top (ADF and all) with the gray button on the right so that it's slightly raised and then switch the printer on. When it comes up, just close and print/scan/copy as usual. Apparently the spring in the arm warped the interior surface where the head moves and it can't line up when it's closed. Hope this helps.
