Set up a wired controller
Step 1: Install the Xbox 360 controller for Windows software
Use the installation CD that came with your Xbox 360 controller for Windows before you connect the controller for Windows to your computer:

1. Insert the installation disc in the CD or DVD drive of your computer. If the Setup program does not automatically start, change to your CD or DVD drive and run the setup program.
2. On the setup screen, click Install.
3. The Xbox 360 Accessories Setup program installs the necessary files to your computer.Note You might be prompted to restart your computer after the installation is complete.

If you don't have an installation disc for your Xbox 360 controller for Windows, you can download and install the software online:

1. Go to the Software Downloads section of the Microsoft Hardware website.
2. Select Gaming as the product type.
3. Select Xbox 360 Controller for Windows as the product.
4. Select the version of Microsoft Windows you are using on your computer, select your operating system language, and then click Download.
5. Click Run.
6. The Xbox 360 Accessories Setup program installs the necessary files to your computer.Note You might be prompted to restart your computer after the installation is complete.

Step 2: Connect the controller to your computer
After you install the software, plug your Xbox 360 wired controller's USB connector into a USB 2.0 port on your computer.
Step 3: Test the controller
To test your Xbox 360 wired controller on your computer, follow these steps:

1. On your computer, click Start, type Run, type joy.cpl, and then press ENTER.
2. Select Xbox 360 Controller, and then click Properties.
3. Test your Xbox 360 wired controller by pressing a button, pulling a trigger, or moving a stick on the controller. If the controller is functioning correctly, you will see the corresponding action light up in the application. If the application does not recognize your controller, see Troubleshoot your Xbox 360 controller for Windows.

Connect a wireless Xbox controller

To connect additional controllers, follow these same steps again. You can connect up to four controllers to the console. • To disconnect a wireless controller, press and hold the Guide button for three seconds, and then choose to turn the controller off.
• When you turn off the console, the controller will reconnect the next time you turn on the console.
• The controller can be connected to only one console at a time. You can connect the controller to a different console, but the connection to the previously connected console will be lost.

unscrew the back of the afterglow controller, there will be this little whit thing that is connected to it. you wanna pull that off and, either buy another on on ebay or something. or replace it from another wired controller

Connect a wired Xbox controller
Plug the Xbox 360 Wired Controller into a USB port on the Xbox 360 console. There are two USB ports on the front of the console. To disconnect the controller, pull on the connector, not the cable.
The cable on the Xbox 360 Wired Controller has an inline release. The inline release on the controller cable is a safety feature designed to reduce the chance of the Xbox 360 console falling if the cable is pulled.
Wireless controller troubleshooting
If your wireless controller disconnects or cannot connect to your console, see Xbox 360 Wireless Controller disconnects or can't connect.
If your wireless controller does not turn on or loses power, try the following solutions:
Solution 1: Replace the batteries
Insert a new set of AA alkaline batteries into the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, and then try to turn it on.
Solution 2: Try a different battery pack
If you have another Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, take the battery pack off that controller and attach it to your controller. Then try to turn your controller on.
If your controller works with the different battery pack, your original battery pack might be defective. If your controller is under warranty, you can order a replacement battery pack from Xbox Support . See the Assistance section at the bottom of this page for more information.
If your controller is out of warranty, you can buy a new battery pack from a retail store.
Solution 3: Try a rechargeable battery packIf you or a friend has an Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack, attach that battery pack to your controller and try to use your controller. If your controller works with the rechargeable battery pack attached, you can buy a new battery pack from a retail store or order a replacement battery pack from Xbox Support. Uhm maybe you need to get a better xbox 360 headset!! Get rid of the afterglow go for something that would be easily installed because if ur mic is new u prob did not plug it in right if it has wires if it's wire less cant help you there I have turtle beach x11 and their wired plugged in the tv and the Xbox and to the controller.

1 Disconnect all accessories and wired controllers from the Xbox 360.
2 Hold the "Guide" button down for three seconds on any wireless controllers, then respond to the prompt on your television screen to disconnect the controllers from your system.3 turn on the wireless headset by pressing the "Power" button in the center of the earpiece. 4 Press the "Connect" button on the front of your Xbox 360 system. 5 Press the "Connect" button on the wireless headset. The ring of lights around the power button of the Xbox 360 system should spin and blink once. One of the lights should remain lit up, indicating the port number that the headset is using. If you do not see any lights on the system, you may have a faulty wireless headset.6 Press the "Guide" button on your wireless controller to reconnect the controller to the Xbox 360 system. If you are using a wired controller, you can plug it back into the system.7 Press the "Connect" button on the top of your wireless controller to sync the controller with your system. You should see the connection light around the "Guide" button on the controller light up, indicating which port you are connected to. You should also see a corresponding port light in the ring around the power button of your Xbox 360 system 8 Press the "Connect" button on the wireless headset until the port light on the headset matches the light on the controller and Xbox 360 system. For example, if you are the first player, the light for port number one should be lit up on the Xbox system, the controller and the headset. When all lights correspond, your headset should be properly connected.

It's possible the xbox 360 controller isn't connected to the xbox 360. Turn the xbox 360 on by pressing the power button, and wait until it reaches the dash board. Then press the controller syncing button on the xbox 360 itself and wait until the xbox 360's ring lights start to spin around. Then press and hold the synch button on the controller (located near the charge port) and the controller should synch up with the xbox 360.

I can't help you much since i can't physically fiddle with it, but my best guess would be either a damaged USB port or the USB connector on the controller is damaged.

The wired and wireless controllers can be actively connected to an Xbox 360 console all at one time. Each connected controller is assigned a quadrant on the Ring of Light. Before you can connect a wireless controller, at least one quadrant must be free and will be unlit.

Connecting an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller to an Xbox 360 Console is called Connecting. To connect a controller to a console:
First, Press and hold down the Guide Button on the wireless controller until it turns on.
Second, Press and release the power button to turn the console on.
Third, Press and release the connect button on the console.
Fourth, Press and release the connect button on the controller.
Fifth, After the ring of light on the controller and console spin and flash once, the controller is connected. The quadrant that remains lit indicates the controller's position.

There is interference and the controller does not respond properly

Step 1: Ensure that either the AA batteries are new or the Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack has a full charge.

Step 2: Ensure that you have performed the proper procedure to connect the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller to the console.

Step 3: If still experiencing issues, ensure there is a clear line of sight between the front of the console and the wireless controller. If there are any obstructions, especially metal objects, remove them.

Step 4: 2.4 gigahertz cordless telephones, microwave ovens, and Bluetooth headsets for cell phones can interfere with the operation of the wireless controller. Turn off or unplug those devices and then try to connect the wireless controller to the console again.

Step 5: If these steps did not resolve the issue, the wireless controller may need to be replaced.
