SOURCE: hard drive controller

These can be fun and Hdd/IDE/SATA Controllers on Desktops are different than laptops.. Embedded controller chips as well as the Northbridge/Southbridge chips are integrated to everything else and its a nightmare to track down period. (Ive had to replace Integrated Modem chips to cure a Boot or BSOD error that states the Video Adapter needs to be changed) ..(Generally due to Power surge or other).. You are on the right track however and I'd just suggest running Memtest of the Knoppix to start be4 I can say other. Is there Shared or dedicated RAM for the GPU on this one? They manned both ways depending on the specific board revision..

SOURCE: hp pavilion dv5000 hard drive problems

It is rare that you get notice of impending harddrive failure so heed the warning now. If it were me, I would back up all files to an external drive, and better yet, use a program such as Norton Ghost or Acronis and make a drive image. That way you can blow the image back on a new drve and be up and running right away. The alternative is to back up docs, pics, etc and reload every program including operating system, which is very time consuming.

Hard drive activity LED indicator is red flashing , hp 4515s doesnt work

Blinking usually indicates activity as whereby some form of startup action is prompting the drive to boot. Failure to boot means the operating system boot sector is not starting and needs reinstallation of the OS.

I got mac g4 just got face and ? on it, any have idea what going on it

Typically this is operating system corruption or a failed hard drive. If you can boot to your install media (CD, USB, or recovery partition) try a clean install. You could also try third party software solutions like Disk Warrior or Drive Genius (they supply bootable media) to fix the OS issues or check the disk for failures / corruption

Bios password

On most Panasonic Toughbook models, when you turn on the power and immediately press the "Esc" key, then a new startup menu will be shown.

Simply choose "CD-ROM Drive" as the boot device and make sure that you have previously inserted a CD-ROM in the drive and then the Panasonic Toughbook should startup or "boot" from the cdrom
instead of from the internal hard disk drive.

My sony vaio pcg-551l won't go past "no operating system"

If this is the first time your trying to start up this computer try to restart it. Sometimes brand new laptops can fail to find the operating system on first startup. If this isn't the case it sounds like your Hard Drive is either disconnected or has had a critical failure.

SR1500NX Model desktop compaq presario got a virus yesterday. I was running virus scanner, takes 4-5 hrs usually. About 90 mins in, my brother came and closed everything out, and just went on using it. Now...

Make sure you do not have a diskette in the diskette drive, if you have one. Check the connections on the hard drive make sure they are all properly seated (on the system board as well as on the drive). Once this is done check to see if the system starts up. If the same error continues, take the hdd off and put it in another computer (make sure you have virus protection on it). Next take all of your files and copy them to a flash drive or cd. Once you have saved your files reinstall the hard drive on the original machine. Startup the machine and go to your setup menu and set your computer to boot from the cd rom drive. Install your windows cd in the cd rom drive and reboot your machine and reinstall windows, reinstall your programs from their respective disks, and copy your files from the backups you created to the flash drive or cd.
Good luck and remember to always backup your system. This will save time in the event this happens again.

2 hard disks

Because you have a dual boot system, you have two 'C' drives, which in fact is a good idea if you get a system failure on the drive you are using, you can select the other and still view any files on the other drive through my computer.

f using XP, right click my computer, then properties, then click advanced tab, then startup and recovery listing click settings, at the top system startup, select the default operating system, then click EDIT button, then delete the value that points to the other hard drive more than likely listed as disc1, disk 0 will be the one you have connected as master boot hard drive

Disk boot failure

there are multiple reasons for this

1. hard drive failure
solution: replace hard drive reinstall operateing system

2. computer is not set to start from hard drive
solution: enter bios and set computer to start up from hard drive

3. Hard drive not detected or cable loose.
solution: check are the hard drive cables connected well. try disconnecting and then reconnecting.

4. Hard drive file system corrupted and unable to find start up files
solution: you can use the windows xp to enter repair console and try to correct the corruption with chkdsk command if that doesnt work you have to reinstall operateing system
