HP really has very good support--call and speak with a live person, and you should be ok, or else have a problem identified which might require use of your warranty, if it is still in place. You can also troubleshoot setting up a wireless network yourself using XP or Vista help--they are not too bad. Do you use a router? if so, you need to set it up for encryption, or anyone can use it (like a neighbor).

Compaq cq57 unable to connect to wireless network

A bit vague, but here is the drill:

Click on the networks icon by the clock in the bottom right corner (if you are on windows XP, right-click on the wireless networks icon). Pick the network you want to connect to from the list. If it requires a password it will ask for it and you type it in. If it fails you almost certainly have the wrong password - go ask whoever owns the network.

At what stage is it failing?

I am unable to connect to an actiontec wireless router with a compaq laptop it sees the network but unable to access it

You will need to check the wireless settings of the router
is there any computer connected to the router ?
If yes then you can open the router set up page on that computer.
Router set up page is the page where you can check all the wireless settings of the router.

You should be able to go into Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center and select Setup a connection or network to bring up a wizard that will guide you through the process of setting up your wireless connection.

Unable to connect my wifi laptop to my existing wireless b/band

Your wife's laptop is setup to connect to another wireless network. It must be set up now for the wireless network that you are trying to connect to. This means that your wife's laptop is trying to connect to the wireless network somewhere else. You need to let the laptop look for available wireless networks. It should be able to see your wireless network. It will then require you to enter the password that you have set in your Zyxel. If you don't know the password, call Zyxel.
