The colours on screen have got scrambled.Grass is a mauve colour, many things are green when they should be white and there is also discolouration on the program page guide.
It sounds like something has left a strong magnetic field on the face of the picture tube, and that's causing the colour distortion. The electron beams from the tube's colour guns are hitting the wrong spots on the face. There is a degaussing circuit in the TV that tries to neutralise such fields every time the set turns on. Sometimes electrical equipment (particularly motorised
appliances like a vacuum sweeper) operating too close to the TV can
leave a field too strong for the degaussing circuit to cope with. Or a failed part in the circuit may have made it inoperative.
A hand-held degaussing coil can be used to remove the field. You can purchase one online, or call a TV service technician. It used to be a standard tool to carry.
Another possibility is that the tube has been damaged. There is a very thin metal mesh screen called the shadow mask behind the face of the tube. If this mask has been warped by a strong magnetic field or a mechanical shock (if the set was dropped, for instance), you will see the same colour distortion. In this case, however, there is no repair other than tube replacement. And that is likely to cost more than a new set with parts and labour.
