My dad and I fixed this for my niece - for us the speaker was busted. We ended up taking the speaker off of an old modem we had lying around. It involved some soldering, but the modem speaker fit right into the old speaker housing - and it works! (note, the volume is lower). So if you know how to use a solder iron and have an old speaker sitting around, give it a try.
Yes I have changed the batteries twice.
Same problem here. Took it apart (24 screws!) and the speaker is busted. It's a 16 ohm .25w mini speaker. I'm looking around ebay for a replacement and they are about $5 each. I wish radio shack was still around. This looks like something they would carry.
