Can't sign in to yahoo messenger

try resetting your password. log on to mail.yahoo.com and from the sign in page at the bottom part there is a link that says forgot password or i cannot access my account.

make sure you have an internet connection. try opening a website.
if you cannot log in to yahoo messenger what error are you getting?
if password error check your password and user name
in yahoo messenger you don't have to type in the @yahoo.com in the username and the password try to type it in the notepad to check if you typed the correct password.
copy that password then paste it in the password box.
check for your antivirus and firewall setting maybe it is stopping your yahoo messenger from connecting the internet.
also try uninstalling and reinstalling your yahoo messenger. try downloading the latest version
if still don't get any luck logging in.
try to log in to the web base yahoo messenger

You will have to take the same route as if someone has accessed your account and changed the security questions

I suggest you to check whether your email address and password is correct or not, by logging in at the www.yahoomail.com website, If you are able to login then your account exists and the email address and password is correct.
If it shows wrong password, try forgot password.

If you are able to login to your account in website, only you cannot login in yahoo messenger, There might be some problem in yahoo messenger, I suggest you to download the recent version of yahoo messenger and try logging in, if problem persists check your internet connectivity, Sometimes we couldn't login if there is a problem in internet connection.
There may also be problem with windows firewall settings.

And also check whether the yahoo messenger is added as exception in the windows firewall or not, If not add the yahoo messenger to exception list.

Verify that the same Yahoo! ID and password you used before in the last step also works in the online version of Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger for the Web:

enter the same Yahoo! ID and password you were using before.
> Step 5: Check Connection Settings
Click the Messenger menu and select Connection Preferences.
Click Connect directly to the Internet, and then click OK.

Check by Changing the connection type to a connection via a proxy server:
Click the Messenger menu and select Connection Preferences.
Click Connect via a proxy server, then under this option, select HTTP proxy, and then click OK.


Last is Uninstall all the Yahoo Tool Bars and Yahoo applications , Yahoo Messenger, and Yahoo Updates from Program list i.e Control panel - Add/Rem Programs ..
And reinstall the Yahoo Messenger again -
from www.yahoo.com

ok, in my case i remembered I tried using a proxy on internet explorer and forgot to put it off, so the proxy connection was still on even though the proxy was dead.

It now a proven fact to me that internet explore settings are linked to yahoo mess!
so make sure your internet explorer is working ok without proxy:

1. Open your Internet Explorer
2. Go to Tools > Internet Options then click the Connections tab
3.Click the LAN Settings button and a new dialog box will open
4. At the new dialog box, look for the Proxy server checkbox, if this is checked, uncheck it.
5. Then your done, click OK button for the dialog boxes.
6. Try logging in to your Yahoo Messenger account.
