This model has a history of touchpad problems. Most times it is the ribbon cable that has come disconnected from the board. The connector is beneath the "C Cover" or top coer assembly. This is not for at the faint hearted. LOL. If you can keep track of screws and sizes. The manual may be helpful. Most IBM/Think models have full videos on how to repair replace something on the thinkpads. This model does not have one that I could find. But here is the manual

Aspire 5100 mouse is frozen how to fix problem

Try restarting your computer by pushing the windows button on the bottom of the keyboard on the left side, generally next to the ALT button. use your arrow keys to move over to the shut down button, select restart and restart your computer. Or you can shut down and then push the power button to start up your computer. This should help reset your laptop and unfreeze your mouse.

If this does not work, go to the control panel, again using the windows button and the arrow keys. select mouse, then go thru the tabs on the window to make sure that your mouse pad is selected to control your mouse.

If you found this information helpful, please remember to leave positive feedback.

Thank You,

Cannot move cursor by touchpad. Can't shut it down either, since I can't go to start menu.

Try the following: 1. Check if the on/off button on your touch pad is turned on. 2. Restart the computer by pressing ALT+F4 until you get a shut down screen and then using arrow keys to scroll to restart. 3. If still not working, try reinstalling your touch pad drivers from the disk you got with your computer (connect an external mouse to do so, if not introduced to keyboard shortcuts). Good luck and please rate if something helps.

The arrow cursor ( pointer) has stopped in one place as though it has frozen itself there and it you use the touch pad nothing happens what do i do next

if it works with a mouse plugged in you might have accidently turned the mouse pad off, use FN key and on mine it's F7 to turn it off and on. hope this works for you

My pointer is frozen on my emachines laptop? I've tried restarting it but that didn't help.

I hope your touch pad or touch pad driver is not working - try to reload the driver and see if the problem persist its your touch pad - then connect a usb mouse externally and see its working

Compaq notebook laptop: my mouse pointer or arrow is

If you have a manual for the notebook, check to see if you can use the function key and the similarly coloured key on the keyboard which enables/disables the touch pad. Usually you can disable the mouse pointer touch pad with this FUNCTION key + MOUSE key when pressed together. Often these keys have the same colour (usually blue). The purpose is to disable the touch pad when you are using an external USB or wireless mouse, then you press the 2 keys again together to enable the touch pad once you have removed the USB/wireless mouse.

If that doesn't work, borrow a USB mouse and attach it to your notebook to use temporarily while you diagnose the problem.

Frozen mouse with a touch pad laptop computer

Check your drivers. Go into the device manager (start>control panel>system>hardware>device manager>human interface device) . If it shows a big yellow question mark, than it is a driver problem.

I would suggest that you either install or download the latest drivers for the mouse, and you can do this even without checking for a hardware conflict as stated above.

You can also access the control panel and trouble shoot your mouse through the mouse icon.

Even sometimes this may not work.....

I had an IBM brand optical mouse that continually plague me with problems until I gave it away with a computer that I built. The person who has it is still have occasionally issues with the mouse even with the proper drivers installed. I believe that it is a connection issue because sometimes the mouse will start working when you jiggle the male USB connection.
