I have the onkyo HT-R530 receiver from the HTiB 7.1 surround. I was wondering if it was possible to hook up powered speakers to the receiver and obtain volume control?

Hi Richard, please make sure that the source has been assigned to the optical connection via the setup menu or you can select the source and then press the digital input button until the display shows the optical connection where the physical connection was made on the back of the Onkyo, Thanks, JT
set the input selector to the proper component sources your using.
set your speaker settings to either 5.1 or 7.1, according to your speaker configuration via Onkyo's AccuEQ automatic setup tool- because the same binding posts can be used for hooking up the Atmos height or surround back speakers; you'll need to tell the Onkyo system which setup you're using.
You cannot plug in a turn table to this receiver because it does not have a pre-built pre-amp. So unless your turn table comes with a pre-built pre-amp you cannot use it with this receiver.
One way or another, it sounds like the amp has blown. Probably the outpous and/or drivers and such. Perhaps one of the speakers was either shorted, wires touching or hooked up wrong.
you are in stereo mode which only uses the two front speakers, hit the surround sound button remote or hit the mode button and cycle through until you get to the Dolby II setting
