Hi Bob, there should be a language selection facility the on menu. Check it out I am sure this will clear the problem!

Found below instructions - should work to change from chinese as well.

Your Brother machine's LCD can display information in English or Spanish. The default language is English.
To change the language on your Brother machine's LCD, follow these steps:

1. Press Menu, 0 (Initial Setup), 0 (Local Language).
   
   
2. Press the Up or Down arrow key to choose English or Espanol.
   
   
3. Press the OK key.
   
   
4. Press the Stop/Exit key.

I would try to be a little sneaky if the writing is in Chinese----Yahoo has a free online service called Babel Fish---type some common words like English, Menu etc and compare them to the writing on screen when you enter the menu--looking for the language the set is set to in that language.

It will translate words from chinese to English and vice versa.

Short of getting someone who reads and speaks that language it is the only simple way I know to approach this odd issue.

Given the fact that ATM machines now offer instructions in several languages I would be glad it is not Russian.

Try unplugging the tv for the night, or a day, it should reset the settings to defaults, if the settings are still in chinese, look for a reset button on your tv. there maybe a memory battery inside the tv that keeps the settings in memory. But its unlikely, so unplugging for a night or a day should get rid of the issue and it should go back into English, unless the tv was made and purchased in china or japan where the language would be the default, original setting..

even tho we can't understand the words , if it is in chinese , turn on the TV , CLICK MENU , hopefully the icons on the left are universal symbols , if not count down to that tool box icon , 5 icons down , or last icon , follow me , highlight that icon ,and click your CONFIRM (enter) button , even tho we can't understand the words , then see my arrow pointing at the word LANGUAGE , it is highlighted ... ok there is only 2 choices on your TV chinese or english , hopefully you see the 2 choices in chinese , whichever 1 is already highlighted , choose ( highlight ) the other using your up and down arrow buttons , press CONFIRM (enter) , and we should see english now .
i hope you can follow these directions and FIX IT , if not , well i know we can .but let us know before giving up .
