The E42 error indicates a problem with the door lock mechanism. If the door was closed, did you hear the lock attempt to engage? If you heard the lock, check the door strike. If the strike is good, replace the door lock. If the lock didn't attempt to engage, check the wiring between the door lock and the control board. If the wiring is well seated and the wires have continuity, replace the door lock. If the replacement lock doesn't solve the problem, then replace the main control board. (You should find a diagram with the wiring inside the unit near the control board.) If you have broken wires in the wiring harness, replace the wiring.
Please add a comment with the model of your washer if you want me to point you to any parts/price lists.

I suggest rapid reading alarm code when appliance is in normal operating mode (e.g. during the execution of the washing

Press and hold down START/PAUSE and any of the option buttons for at least two seconds: the LEDs initially switch off, and then display the flashing sequence corresponding to the alarm.

Just followed the advice above by removing the 2 screws holding the top on and manually released the front load door. Now to figure out what part I need to replace the door lock mechanism and figure out how to do that.
My electrolux EWF1087 is leaking water from the front door, I cannot see any damage on the door seal although I never noticed its folded over and full of dirt. Do I need a new seal ?
