According to the operation manual: If alarm light and data light blink every 5 seconds- TONER LOW (purchase more toner and have it ready when the 'toner empty' is indicated). If alarm light and data light stay lit- TONER EMPTY (replace toner cartrige with new one).

Data and alarm lights stay on,won't print

The Toner cartridge is empty, You can possibly take out the toner and tilt it fron side to side and maybe get a few more prints, but most likely you will need to replace the toner.

Printer Won't Print

Follow the link below for what the lights on the machine mean. I know that if your alarm and data light are on it means the toner is empty, and you wont be able to print, you would need to replace the toner cartridge, please follow the link below.

Ready light doesn't stay lit, alarm light is red

Because I was getting gray shading on my pages and data was still being printing, I decided to change the toner cartridge. Now the pages are clean and white and all the lights function properly. Most cartridges that are running on empty don't print any data at all or at least print the data at the top of the page and gradually gets fainter sp? on the page. Who would have thought just by changing the cartridge would solve the problem? So glad that's all it was........wasn't excited about having to buy a new printer.

Drum light on Ready light on Alarm light on Data light on

Alarm and Data lights on together is from low toner. If shaking of the toner cartridge is not helping, change the toner.
Drum light is usually on because of the print counter. If the print quality goes really bad, change the drum and reset the counter by holding the front button wile the front cover is open till all lights come on. Release the button and close the cover.
If just Data light is on, check the print ques, some jobs might got stuck there.

Alarm and data lights are both on and when i go to print nothing happens

take y'r drum and toner out of the printer.. now there should be two translutent white circular film on either side of your toner... what u have to do is take a small piece of paper and make a bead out of it and insert that small paper bead right in front of those film.. u can insert on both side or on just one...

if u don't find those circular film then open y'r HL printer toner loading tray and turn y'r printer ON.... u will see green or red light coming out of either side of y'r printer where toner sits.. thats the place u should look for those film on y'r toner....

it worked for me... hope it works for u too...

PEACE..

Brother HL-1440

(blinking every 5 seconds) Toner Low Indicates that the toner cartridge is nearly empty. Purchase a new toner and have it ready for when Toner Empty is indicated. (solid) Toner Empty Replace the toner cartridge with a new one. User's Manual is available at the following location: http://www.brother-usa.com/Data/Documentation/Printer/User/UM_HL1440_1450_1470N.pdf Hope this helps.
