The engine runs fine and the generator produces electricity but shortly after start up the generator head gets hot and starts to smoke. What could be the problem or solution?

If you really mean the "generator head", which I understand as the outer bearing cover of the generator, your problem may be a bad contact or worn out brush-ring assembly, or a bearing problem (not very much believable).

When the head gasket fails on a liquid (water) cooled engine the typical smoke colour is white (steam) and that becomes rather underlined by the steady drop of the coolant level and often clear evidence combustion gas is leaking into the cooling system.
Smelly black/grey smoke tends to be produced by an over-fuelling condition such as a stuck choke or strangler or other cold starting aid or perhaps carburettor flooding.
Blue or blue/grey smoke is invariably engine oil burning but I suggest you ignore that until the black smoke problem is rectified and after a short time the blue smoke might also disappear. If it doesn't it could be related to the overheating but the black smoke probably wasn't caused by that...
Air cooled engine ok , When the engine shut off did it white smoke out the garden it could be the head gasket Low compression and it won't start poor compression and it might start but run poorly stall easily and white smoke produce because of unburnt fuel escaping into hot exhausts and vaporizing

How to make Generac generator run bypassing the low oil sensor and ... Remove all; Disconnect .... My ...
Could be lost exciter current. This is how to restore it - Connect 16 or 18 gauge wires to a 12 volt battery. With generator running, insert bare ends of wires into AC outlet - one to Hot, the other to Neutral. Insert and remove quickly. There should be a flash and power will be restored. If not, repeat until you get that flash and output current restored. Using light gauge wires is so that if you are too slow to remove them once AC is restored. they will burn out before the battery suffers from the AC incoming. Be quick and be careful.
White smoke is usually from water and water will make the car splutter. Did you get water in your tank at some time. If you have water in your fuel, you will have to drain the tank and refill with good fuel. The engine will run fine once it is hot but if a lot of water goes into a hot cylinder it can cause a lot of damage.
Is that all you ran it was the one time? Sounds like a mouse. Or bugs got in there and built a nest, something just burning off. Get the air gun on that thing and blow it out, then try it again, hopefully it is just dust and dirt piled up in there.
Probably a vavle cover gasket leak, small but enought to produce oil, in or on the surface of the motor doesnt take much to a lil smoke from aa hot engine...it could be collectiing in the canals ontop of the motor where the vlave covers sit on the head? or a head gasket problem....inspect it well after you run the car for a lil while, b4 it starts to smoke
