Monitor is going off after a few seconds the power led is glowing

Hi,
I have got a hp pavilion dv5000, when I turn on it the screen goes blank.

Power led glows, I hear for a few time the fan, disk led flashes intermittently and also I feel that the DVD player tries to load.

If I try to click on caps lock or num lock, leds don't respond to commands. I tried the hard reset pressing the power button for 30 seconds with the battery and the power removed. Nothing to be done by connecting an external monitor....

What can I do ?

Step 1:

to unlock memory card password, u will need a memory card unlocker device. it will cost you nearly 10$.

Step 2:

now plug this device into your pc or laptop's usb port and insert your locked memory card. a led light will glow for few seconds(reading memory card). after few seconds that led light will turn off automatically and now you can press unlock button on this device. that led will glow again for few seconds. when led again turns off then you can remove your memory card and it is successfully unlocked.

sounds like the bulb will not fire up. most likely cause is the bulb needs replacing

The picture board on your monitor is bad, since it goes off after few seconds and the power led or button is on, it means the picture board of your monitor has developed fault.

The best thing for you to do now is to take the monitor to a local repairer within your vicinity to help with the replacement of the picture board because the fault is not something you can fix yourself, in order not to complicate issues.

Something is wrong with the power supply of the Hi Voltage section

As you said the main power LED seems to be glowing but the system is not powering on... so there are few things to check here:

1. Remove all other connections apart from Power supply, keyboard, mouse and monitor and see if that makes any difference.
2. When the computer normally boots up there is a POST check Beep sound from CPU .. do you here any beep?
3. When you tap on numlock key on your keyboard, do you see numlock LED toggle between ON and OFF state?
4. Is there any signal on monitor .. When disconnected from the CPU, the monitor should show Self test signal .. does it happen?
5. Open the chassis and check if you can feel the spinning of Hard drive...
6. Remove the power supply cord from the back of the computer and press and hold the power button for few seconds .. this would drain the accumulated power from the CPU components .. now reconnect the power supply and see if that makes any difference..

Thanks, but the problem fixed itself. After leaving the scanner on for a very long time, the LED finally started to glow steadily. Now after power cycle it only takes a few seconds to become ready.

Looks like the Video card, or Video chip has bought the farm
Try hooking up to another monitor to confirm where the problem is.
