I took mine apart today . Right front wheel is worn completely away on the inside drive teeth. The left front is half gone. I ordered two wheels for 19.99 each with free shipping . Sears has them on back order .

On your model I beleive these wheels are driven with small gears inside the inside diameter of the wheels. If the shaft is turning, then you probably have a gear problem. Remove a wheel and inspect both the wheel, and the small gear. They are prone to wear.I'd suggest replacing all four parts if worn.

Thanks i will check, but i probably needed to check shaft don't think it is turning, neither wheel is
turning and both had been working.Thought probably something in transmission but really don't know what to look for.

Oh, I tought you indicated the drive shaft was turning. Yes if the driveshaft is not turning, and the input pully is , be sure your cable is pulling the lever on the transmission.

I have a Craftsman front wheel self propelled mower. The front wheels no longer turn either in self-propel or in manual push mode. What can be done to fix this?

Take a good look at the wheel assembly. Is it rusted on from being left exposed to the elements? Remove the cover for the self propelled mechanism. Is the drive belt intact? Try turning the small pulley.

I have a self propelled lawn mower and the the belt that propells the wheels is loose, do I need to replace it or is there a way to tighten the tension.

Cathy, there is a way to adjust belt tension on some models whether it is by the cable or a slotted bracket where the idler wheel is mounted, depends on make and model. If you have your manual check in it for belt adjustment. Could be stretched belt, stretched cable, worn/oil on pulley, seized tensioner, stretched/broken spring on tensioner, etc.

The self propel system slowly stopped working and now doesn't work at all, what could it be?

Hello,

You didn't specify the make or model of your mower, but generically speaking for self-propelled walk-behind mowers, the drive belt or the front wheel gears can wear out after several years of use. The drive belt could also be loose or off the pulley. The belt and the front wheels can usually be replaced.

You can remove the drive pulley cover and see if the belt is off.

The other components that make up the drive system are the gearbox and the engagement cable. Sometimes the cable can get get out of adjustment or come loose.

Why are the front wheels on a craftsman rotary power-propelled mower hard to turn but after you start the mower and wait 2-3 minutes they start to turn Model NO. 917376673?

The drive belt may have come off the pulley. If that's the case you will need a new belt and possible the retainers that keep it in place.

My craftsman 22" self propelled

Your problem is at other end . Engagement problem is probably due to a loose belt. Make adjustment in that area of mower. GOOD LUCK.

Front propulsion not engaging

This is probably a belt driven machine...remove the cover. (could have Torx screws). and see if the belt is on the lower engine pulley and is on the pulley to the drive transmission...If OK, then check the action of the spring that helps engage the transmission.

Self-propell won't work

broken or worn out worm/sector gear most likely.

can you spin the drive pulley on the transmission and see if the wheels turn? If they dont spin you have internal damage or wear. If they do spin you either have a worn out drive engagement cable or it has come off the transmission.

good luck and be careful!

Craftsman 6.0 lawnmower frontwheel drive won't engage .

Make sure the belt has not slipped off of the pulley on the engine output shaft just above the cutting blade. It is common with those type of drives for debris to make the belt hop off.

Toro 20016 self propel

If you take the wheels off and remove the belt from the small pulley on the the front axle underneath the pulley you should see a small transmission. You usually can split this unit in half . You will see two gears and sometimes one plastic and one metal. The plastic one is usually the culprit. Hope this will help you out. Donnyb60
