Canon mp610 scanning problem

My new Canon MP610 will not scan. Copy and print are working well. I try to scan, but get the Scangear message 'Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Scanner driver will be closed. Code 2,155,0.
I am running Windows XP on a Dell.

Same problem, mine is connected directly to usb on computer and will not scan properly. Will scan using scanner and camera wizard if resolution is kept low (150dpi) but any attempt to increase resolution causes failure.
Works fine on my laptop so I guess the problem is to do with the usb interface on my standalone. Gigatech P4M800Pro-8237 main board Gigatech. All my other usb devices work perfectly and it makes no difference to replug the scanner into any of the other usb ports front or back. I cannot find any references to this problem anywhere than here.

Yep, I have the same exact problem with the MP610, except mine is connected thru a wired print server device, then thru a wired router, and then to two computers (based on what I was shown in frys, a print server device/router setup via CAT5 cables would not be the same situation as using a USB hub). also tried scanning directly using the MP610 buttons, and got as far as "place document on platen, and press , but nothing happens. I'm wondering if this is a defective machine? Printing and other functions work fine.

I finally got my scanner working, after trying different USB ports. No longer using a USB hub. Having solved my problem, I discovered the 'Readme' file within the program 'Canon MP610 series' which included the following text : "Some USB hubs may experience problems with MP Drivers. If this happens, connect the device directly to the USB port on the PC, or change the USB port that the device is connected to."

I too have the same problem and same error messages, you would have thought that Canon would have solved this problem which is obviously being experienced by a considerable number of people. This problem only exists on my desktop XP home with SP3, on laptop with XP home and SP2 it works fine! Could the problem lie with something in SP3?

It would appear that they have adopted the attitude "we have your money, so who cares? Suckers!!"

I would appreciate any help that can be offered.

    I have viista 32 bit.

I still have the same problem with the mp610. It does not scan but it will print. I have learned I cannot use Nvidia drivers on this version of Vista.I have to use Microsoft drivers. I am going to look for driver fixes pertaining to the USB ports. This problem seems to be driver related.

The readme says that some USB hubs have an issue.

I was having problems and was connected via a hub. I removed the hub and connected the printer directly to the back of the PC and voila scanning is all good.

I thought I had this problem - but installing the Scanner software on CD 2 helped!

I do not have cartridges in my canon mp610 at the moment and there is a message on the screen that tell me that but it wont go away and when i try to scan it says on my mac that it is undergoing...

Without cartridges installed on a printer, it'll never run unless you install them. You'll see the error message and you'll not be able to do anything. If you have old cartridges, you can try. While there's an error message, you can't even scan or copy or print. So the only solution is to install the cartridges and do whatever you have to do with it.

Good luck..

Cannot scan to mp610, but can print (both using bluetooth)

Regrettably, scanning over bluetooth is not possible. Both theoretically and practically. Scanning requires huge amount of data packets to transmitted that is not possible over bluetooth.

When connected to Airport Express via USB, it will

Airport Express provides only a print server, not a networked usb hub so it can only print. I'm afraid you'll have to go back to wired for scanning.

Problem using OCR with Canon MP610 all-in-one

I got this message too, before I installed an OCR program. It may be that you need to install one (or specify it, if you have one already). With my MP610, an installation disk was included that contained the OmniPage SE program for OCR. When I installed that on my computer, and told MP Navigator (another Canon-supplied program, that controls scanning) to use it as the "Open With" program for OCR, it worked.

Coping from Canon MP610

Unfortunately this model does not have document feeder on top. So you can only do it one sheet at a time. I think the 31ppm indicates that you can print 31 copies of one document in one minute. The models above this tend to have document feeders for this purpose but not the mp610.

Good luck.
