My new Canon MP610 will not scan. Copy and print are working well. I try to scan, but get the Scangear message 'Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Scanner driver will be closed. Code 2,155,0.
I am running Windows XP on a Dell.
The readme says that some USB hubs have an issue.
I was having problems and was connected via a hub. I removed the hub and connected the printer directly to the back of the PC and voila scanning is all good.
ALex.
I thought I had this problem - but installing the Scanner software on CD 2 helped!
New Canon MP470 will copy and print fine but would never scan...Got the same ScanGear message, "Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Scanner driver will be closed. Code: 2,155,0"...Thanks to ALex, I unplugged the extension cable (also new) and plugged the printer directly to my laptop and it SCANS :) ...Bernadette33

I am running Windows XP on a ANTEC PC.
Same problem, mine is connected directly to usb on computer and will not scan properly. Will scan using scanner and camera wizard if resolution is kept low (150dpi) but any attempt to increase resolution causes failure.
Works fine on my laptop so I guess the problem is to do with the usb interface on my standalone. Gigatech P4M800Pro-8237 main board Gigatech. All my other usb devices work perfectly and it makes no difference to replug the scanner into any of the other usb ports front or back. I cannot find any references to this problem anywhere than here.
Yep, I have the same exact problem with the MP610, except mine is connected thru a wired print server device, then thru a wired router, and then to two computers (based on what I was shown in frys, a print server device/router setup via CAT5 cables would not be the same situation as using a USB hub). also tried scanning directly using the MP610 buttons, and got as far as "place document on platen, and press, but nothing happens. I'm wondering if this is a defective machine? Printing and other functions work fine.
MP 600 the same problem
i have the same problem, i have tried to instal the scanning program on the CD2 but it doesn't work
yep, same error code 2,155,0... and same issues... tried all usb ports, and spoke at length with cannon tech support... reinstalled programs... still same error... disable all virus controls.. no difrference.. installed software on my mac and voila!! she scans beautifully!!! just wont work on xp usb port..
I finally got my scanner working, after trying different USB ports. No longer using a USB hub. Having solved my problem, I discovered the 'Readme' file within the program 'Canon MP610 series' which included the following text : "Some USB hubs may experience problems with MP Drivers. If this happens, connect the device directly to the USB port on the PC, or change the USB port that the device is connected to."
I too have the same problem and same error messages, you would have thought that Canon would have solved this problem which is obviously being experienced by a considerable number of people. This problem only exists on my desktop XP home with SP3, on laptop with XP home and SP2 it works fine! Could the problem lie with something in SP3?
It would appear that they have adopted the attitude "we have your money, so who cares? Suckers!!"
I would appreciate any help that can be offered.
Printer works but scanner does not. I reenstalled drivers. Tried different usb ports. Cables are ok usbs appear to bel ok. Printer is brand new.
I have viista 32 bit.
I still have the same problem with the mp610. It does not scan but it will print. I have learned I cannot use Nvidia drivers on this version of Vista.I have to use Microsoft drivers. I am going to look for driver fixes pertaining to the USB ports. This problem seems to be driver related.
Same problem "cannot communicate with scanner" It's gong back to the store. I'll try Epson this tme.
I can print but can't scan from my desktop.
