My acer extensa 5420 will not power on. The lights blink but then it shuts down. The screen never comes up. What can I do??
One of the compacitor on your motherboard has become overheated and burned out. You will need to replace your whole motherboard. This seem like it is a common problem on these model. I have the same promblem and they quoted me 150.00 + in parts and 75.00hr for labor. I said hell with this, you can already get a new laptop, unless you an go on ebay and do it yourself if your know what you are doing.
Hey FED32, does it make like a clicking sound when you attempt to start it up, it makes it maybe 2 or 3 times then shuts off. does the first green led light up and then shut off.
EASY FIX! Vacuum out the vents on the bottom! If the cooling fan gets cat hair or dust in it it will stop moving and laptop goes into safe mode! This happened to mine I just vacuumed it out without even taking it apart and boom! Powered right up!

Don't throw it away yet....I had the same problem with mine, took it all apart to "see what I could see" and upon re-assembly, it works perfectly. Apparently something got juked around in there that would prevent booting or something. I suppose while you have it apart, you could look around at the capacitors, etc. to see if anything is crispy, but I inspected mine pretty closely and found nothing. Works good as new now for about 8-9 months since.
If you're lucky, you might just have RAM that's gone bad. If it's the motherboard, it usually means that it's the video card that's died and has to be pulled and replaced. There are a number of highly rated motherboard repair services on eBay that can repair the motherboard for around $100 including shipping.
The other possibility is that your power jack (where you plug the laptop in) has become damaged or worn out. Once again, there are services on eBay for that. Any normal repair shop will cost more than a new laptop.
Good Luck
