Need wiring explained to me for nutone 763rln ceiling fan-light
I'n not quite sure how the other answers above answer this question about wiring, but here's the scoop. I will assume you have ONE switch to turn on the fan/light, and it is an already existing switch, and the old fan/light has wiring run to it. FIRST, be sure the wiring run to the fan is NOT hot; test it with a tester ($10-$15 @ hardware stores) - you should own one - they come in handy. You never know how someone else wired the switch; they might have interrupted the neutral (white) wire and not the hot (black) wire. If the black wire in the old fan is still hot, shut off the breaker before working on it. You will see a small screw on the bottom inside of the fan box; remove it,take out the fan assembly, and it will expose the wiring to the two (one black; one white) plugs. Strip back about an inch of all 4 wires and twist the two white ones together; do the same for the black and the blue. Now you have 3 wires to connect to the house wiring running to the fan. On the outside of the fan box, very near the wiring, you will see two 1/2" knock-outs; they are about the size of a nickle, with a slot in the middle. Stick a flat blade screwdriver in one of the slots, and twist it back and forth until it breaks out. If you don't have one, buy a wire holder (DANG! for the life of me, I don't know what they are called!) that fits into the knockout hole, and holds the nomex wire securely. Give yourself enough wire sticking through to be able to work with. Strip about 3/4" off the black and white wire. Twist the black and blue wires you tied together earlier around the black wire clockwise, all the way up to the tip, and secure with the proper size wire nut (use one with METAL insert, no plastic, thank you!). Do the same with the white wires to the white nomex home wire. Ditto the green wire to the bare ground. I've found these come with barely understandable directions. What the directions don't tell you is that you need to have the edge of the metal box nearly flush with the ceiling. The outside edges of the light fit inside the plastic housing; THEN, plug in the white plug from the light into the outlet, Now, unscrew the acorn nut from the long screw sticking down. Put the light fixture up, and affix the acorn nut, and tighten it. I assume no liability for any of the above directions; if you are not sure about anything, hire a qualified person to do the install for you. Electricity can kill. Proceed with caution; following all the above directions does not guarantee that you will not be hurt or injured.
