Kathy, you probably have a condensor fan that failed. Remove the lower back panel behind the refrigerator. You will see the condensor, condensor fan and compressor. The condensor fan should be running any time the compressor is running. You might have something stopping the fan blades or the motor might be going bad itself. What you are describing is a classic example of a failed condensor fan motor. Catriver.

Almost the same post as my last. This is normal unless the refrigerator is not cooling properly. There is a pipe that goes around the door that carries hot Freon to keep the doors from sweating where the cold inside meets the warm air outside. This area will become extremely hot should the airflow below the refrigerator become obstructed or the condenser fan below the refrigerator not be working properly APPLIANCE 911
One some newer refrigerators, the manufacturer runs a loop of refrigerant tubing up and around the corners of the door seal area. While the refrigerator is running, this tubing will get somewhat warm--even hot if the room temp is hot like in summer. What this tubing and heat does is keep the door seal areas from sweating like a glass of water with ice cubes in it. If it is extremely hot, too hot to touch I would call for service and have it checked out. Some heat is normal.
on front panel around the door where the door seal goes up against is this what is hot check the compressor fan in the back of the machine when it doesnt run or is unoperational then the sides around the door get hot you might have to replace the compressor fan
It's usually caused by the condenser fan which is underneath around back. If it's not running when the compressor runs it will cause the problem you describe. You will need to remove the cardboard backing on the back of the fridge to access the fan.
HI, That area being hot is a sign the refigerator is not cooling properly. We need to pin point the cooling problem. First, are you noticing any frost build up inside the rear freezer panel? Are the fans and the compressor running? Please let me know so I can assist you through this.
Pull fridge out and clean the grill on the back , its a hot pipe running around the door for condensation , if the grill on the back is clogged with dust it will get very hot , see how that goes enjoy
Fridge has either mullion heaters around door or most likely steel pipes just inside the skin of the perimeter of the door, this is to stop ice or condensation forming around the door seals, mainly the freezer, they are part of the condenser circuit ( hot part of the refrigeration system). It is normal for these to get hot, but in your case may be hotter than usual because of the constant running, the running may be caused by hot ambient temperatures, system being slightly short of refrigerant, faulty thermostat or in-efficient compressor. I suggest if temp is ok inside fridge dont worry too much, if you notice fridge starts loosing its capacity to refrigerate, have a refrigeration tech look at it.
If the mullion heater around the doors is hot to the touch the inside temperatures are not being maintained. They should be warm but not hot. This usually indicates a problem in the internal temperatures. Check the back wall of the freezer section for frost buildup. Your defrost system may not be working and it had not gotten to the point of complete failure as far as you noticing the temperature differences yet.
yes very hot around freezer side, also runs all the time
Refrigerator is hot to touch around the door.
