The problem in blank white screen is the display (LCD). Send it to a technician for repair. The blinking folder with a question mark is conflict on drivers. Have you installed a software lately? If you do please uninstall it. Maybe that is the cause of having a blank white screen.

SOURCE: screen goes white, flashing a folder with a question mark

The flashing folder means that the computer can't find the boot system on the hard drive. If your girlfriend's step-dad has removed some parts of the OS, then the system will not start giving the 'flashing folder' result. You will need to re-install the OS from the system disk.
Insert the disk into the computer and it will boot from that and take you through the install procedure.

SOURCE: my macbook has a blank white screen, and then it

Your macbook is not locating your hardrive.
turn off your laptop, insert the Mac OS disc in the drive, and then reboot while holding down the c key to allow it to boot from the OS on the DVD.
Then use the disk utilities application from the desktop menu and to a disk repair on your hard drive and then restart.

Laptop screen blank all white

Either your LCD Video Cable is not plugged in snuggly or the monitor is slowly going bad. The fact that you can see the images on an external monitors says your Video Graphics Card is working fine. You'll need to disassemble the laptop to get to the cables. Get a quote from your local computer shops, then try the guys at: http://www.generalsystemsconsulting.com Most times they will fix it and ship it back by Fedex or UPS cheaper than any quote you obtained including the shipping.

Blank screen with blinking folder

This is a sign that the startup disk can't be found.

When you power on the computer, try holding down the "alt" key or "option" key on your keyboard.

Then after a while, it should ask you to select the location of the operating system. Select your macintosh HD. Everything should load as normal.

If this doesn't work, insert the install cd's and hold down "c" instead. This will load the cd with mac os x on it. You can then install the operating system. Please make sure you have backups. Unless the option to simply upgrade or repair your mac pops up, you will loose your files following this method.
