Bostitch 6 gal compressor regulator knob is broken

The pressure regulator knob seems to be stripped, preventing me from tightening the knob and increasing the air pressure in the hose. Is there a fix?

I've had mine for about 4 and half months... I use it enough to need a reliable tool and right in the middle of a job the pressure regulator knob just strips out on its own. I haven't touched it to adjust the gun pressure since I pulled it from the box... Annoying! Any who, I had to leave the job site early and therefore lost more work time and hence more money in my pocket... The 800 number isn't a 24 hour and that's pretty lame to me....
Pretty stupid design Hope the other parts in this thing aren't faulty and unreliable. I will not take no for an answer they are going to send me a free-bee!
Moral of the story. Read your reviews on a products quality before you buy.
The guns it came with are pretty nice though.

Just called the 1-800-556-6696, press #2 for technical support, got right through. Told her I was having problem with the regulator valve, #27 on parts list / part number AB-9415883, on my CAP2000P-OF. Was told a new valve will be shipped to me from Knoxille, TN and I should recieve it in 5 to 7 days. Was given a comfirmation number and that was it. Just means I can't use my compressor for a few days. I don't use it every day anyway. Good luck to all, that has a problem with this.

Had the exact same thing happen to me today and screwed my day job.Need some help out here in Toronto Canada.

I got my new part in 3 days. Came with no instructions on how to take the old part off and put the new part on. Does anyone know how to take the gauge off the old part? Is there a special tool I need. My wrenches are to thick to fit between the valve and the gauge. I have to remove it to get the old part off.

Plastic red air adjustment knob is striped and will not allow to blow out outlet. What do I do to get another?

Call Bostitch At 800-556-6696 and they will send you a free redesign part #27. It was a bad design part and I just did it a minute ago.

  • techgirl1973 Sep 14, 2010

There was NO re-design with the pressure reducer on this compressor. It was only on the CAP2000P-OF that has a round cover and part #27 which is AB-9415883 on it. The compressor shown above has a TOTALLY different part # of AB-9051116 and is #108 on the schematic

  • timtaylor104 Sep 30, 2010

I just called the 800# as my CAP2000P-OF is having the same problem. They denied there being a design flaw, just said it was re-designed and said I would have to pay $14 for replacement part with $11!

  • rs_jrmy Oct 10, 2010

I just used my compressor not more than a couple weeks ago and it worked fine. I tried to hook an air grinder to it in my garage 2 days ago and I could not get the regulator to stay in to get any pressure. I paid a lot of money for this unit 1.25 years ago and now I have to pay for a new part because of a design flaw. Thanks Bostitch.

  • rijeko Nov 01, 2010

Seems like this is a common problem. I'm not sure if it's a re-designed part or not, but Bostitch is sending me a free replacement part #27 (AB-9415883). It's worth a shot. 800-556-6696.

  • ingwallr Jan 11, 2011

I just called and the customer service rep. immediately said the part was redesigned and sent a free replacement with no shipping costs to me. Called the number above and leveraged the part number.

  • Anonymous Jan 11, 2011

I just called them with the same problem. It looks like if you cannot find your receipt you are out of luck. Same 6 gal pancake compressor, same problem. With this many people complaining I think they DO have a design flaw whether they admit it or not.

  • jmp3886 Feb 01, 2011

Thanks for the post. I just called Bostich and with no problem and free of charge they are sending out the part. It looks fairly easy to install.

  • Anonymous Jun 01, 2011

Ditto. Called 800-556-6696, described the problem and model #, rep politely took my info and ordered me the part. Took less than 5 minutes total and no argument whatsoever.

  • Pinderpc Jun 13, 2011

Didn't work for myself. Called the 800# and they provided another number to call, a local service center. When I explained the issue they wanted to charge me $12 + tax for the part. Calling the 800# and explaining the issue resulted in Bostitch telling me this service center will help. I may just return this to Costco and get something else. Thanks for nothing Bostitch!

  • SvtCobra98 Jun 16, 2011

Glad I found this post, this part broke on my compressor almost two years ago after just a few uses. The compressor has just been sitting in my garage ever since. I just got off the phone with Bostitch & I should have the replacement part in 7-10 day's. Thanks for the tip.

  • Easgles Fan Jul 20, 2011

I just contacted the 800 number for the problem with the pressure reducer and it took all of 2 minutes for them to tell me they would send it to me for free. Thanks for all who posted the info.

  • Anonymous Jul 27, 2011

I've had this unit for about 1-2 years, and it was working fine until last week. Pressure in tank but none in the outlet valve to the hose.

Called Bostitch last week and the said it was the regulator valve, that it was a known issue, that the part was redesigned, and that they would send me a free replacement.

Just arrived today. But now, the question is, does anyone have any tips or advice on how to take the old one off?

I got the top off, removed the hose quick connector (part #26 on a diagram I saw on www.mastertoolrepair.com) and the outlet pressure gauge (#28).

I tend started to disconnect the actual regulator valve (#27), but the red knob sticks out too far and it gets stuck so I can't turn it more than half a revolution.

Am I supposed to removed the entire pressure switch (part #21) but loosening the turning nut (#25) that connects it to the tank?

    Thanks.

  • TexasKayaker Aug 19, 2011

Just happened to me. I was using my CAP2000P-OF for the second time while replacing my baseboards. Suddenly I had no pressure and found the red pressure reducer knob would not tighten. I emailed Bostitch and was instructed to take the unit along with my receipt to a service center in Carrollton Texas. I understand any product can have a design flaw but for a company to deny it and not stand behind it is too much. I will never purchase this brand again. Last weekend I actually had the opportunity to warn a guy at Lowes who had this unit loaded on a cart. He put the unit back and took a different one.

They told me there is no recall or any indication this part was defective and paying for a new one is the only option. This came from parts/warranty rep

Calling the 800.556.6696 phone # and referencing CAP 200P-OF compressor and stating that the threads stripped on the regulator yielded me an immediate offer for a free regulator replacement. I was told they were redesigned and it wouldn't happen again.

FWIW, emailing customer service yielded a request for a receipt for warranty purposes, so I searched google for a cust serv #, and came to this page. Thanks "rijeko"

Here is the story. You do not need a receipt but tell them it is the older compressor. They are obligated by law to replace the part since it has been deemed defective unless they want a class action lawsuit in which case they would have to pay triple damages.

Part Number AB9051116 for 6gal pancake CAP2060P, Stripped Pressure Regulator Diagram #108:
I called the number a month ago 800.556.6696. I was told I needed to dig out my 11 month old receipt and call back. Called again with that a week later. Told I had to get the serial number off the unit and call back. Found the serial number on the unit and called yesterday. Told the part was $7.95 plus nearly $10 shipping? If I wanted to buy it to replace a defective part I would have done so a month ago! I called back angry and gave the person a piece of my mind. They asked me who at their company had supplied me with misinformation since they can replace that part for free. I told her it wasn't my job to manage their employees!!! I have a replacement part shipping to me free now. I guess you just have to blow your top to get proper service with Stanley/Bostitch. 4 phone calls and searching for information I ended up not needing!!!!!! NICE CUSTOMER SERVICE (sarcasm)!

  • dougie15 Jun 28, 2011

Purchased a Bostitch model CAP-2000P-OF 6 gallon compressor thru CPO tools, great prices and quick delivery. I have used this compressor for 2 years with no issues. I went to use it this morning and the had no pressure going to my nail gun. Regulator was broken. Called the 800 number and gave them a part number. AB-9415883. The agent took down my name and address and said they would send me a new regulator for free. Total phone call took about 3min start to finish. Now the waiting game. The agent also mentioned that she had another request like mine earlier today.

Unfortunately they are no longer replacing this part for free. I was told there was no recall or warranty option available for this part.

I had the exact same problem from mine. I called the 800 number and pressed 1 for part information and they gave me a local number to call for warrenty information. When I called it they told me I would have to purchase the part. I told them that wasnt right, but they didnt seem to care. They did give me the option of driving 1hr to have them replace the part for me after I purchased it, or have me pay to have it shipped and replace it myself. I called back to the 800 number and pressed 2 for technical support this time I talked to a very nice lady named Sandy who ordered the part for me free of charge. So when you call be sure to press 2 and if possible ask for Sandy...haha Thank you Sandy!

Thanks to all for posting. I called the 800-556-6696 on 7/3/15. First I went to the parts option and was offered a $17 part with 10.99 shipping. I called again and selected the warranty option. I got Sandy! She said compressor warranties are 1 year but as a courtesy offered to send me a replacement part if I was willing to replace itself. She provided helpful tips for getting the outer cover off too she said for the 2 long bolts to use a 8mm 6 point deep extension on one end and a slotted screwdriver on the other. See also the is YouTube video for case removal https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HvKefX0m9s8. Thank you all for the help!!!

I called and was told that the part was not under a recall, but had been redesigned. They refused to replace the regulator since it was out of warranty, and referred me to a service center where I could purchase a replacement part. I will never purchase another Bostich product again.

Just called the 1-800 number and told them the problem with the broken knob. At first the rep refused to replace it since I had bought the compressor over a year ago. I then told the rep I would just go buy a new one and switch out the tanks and return the broken one since it still looks new since I barely use it. The rep said "I will replace it this ONE time.". So nice of them to be so generous to replace a part that they know is defective. Good luck to everyone else calling them.

All these responses have been very helpful. I also had a stripped regulator knob on my Bostitch CAP2000P-OF air compressor and based upon these responses called the 1-800 number. They indicated there is no recall or defective conditions and they had the part in stock and could sell it to me. I referenced these responses and told them to quit playing games with me. After the scripted hold while my request was reviewed with a "supervisor" they came back on the phone and indicated they would replace free of charge.

Just called the 800 number provided, and the operator tried to insist that there is no problem, recall, redesign. But after I insisted for about 10 minutes, she conceded that she would send a one-time courtesy replacement part. Stay strong and respectful, and you will get the replacement!

AS others I called Bostitch cs first and was told to call a local service center. I called them and they wanted me to bring in the compressor, since they are an hour away I declined.
Called Bostitch back and selected warranty and spoke with a lady, explained the whole speil. First she said there was no recall on the unit, but I politely referred to this thread and other users. I was put on hold twice and finally she came back and told me, as a courtesy , they would ship me a replacement part.
SO Kudos to their customer service, I will continue to be a Bostitch user and customer.

I had the same experience with Sandy today, 7/8/2015, that others had. She (and Bostich) is well aware of the problem with that particular regulator knob. No questions asked - except that she asked which kind of compressor I had. One model has a 0 in the model number and the other has a 1. The model I have has a red knob that pulls out when starting it. You have to tell her if you have that or not. It ships today, will be here in 7-10 business days, no charge. Relieved that it wasn't a hassle and doesn't cost me anything.

For those of you who got the replacement part, did they just replace it, it or is it a better manufactured part? Seems like the knob should have metal threads.

  • Jon Daley Jul 07, 2015

I called today and got Sandy on the first ring...! I told her she was famous, and she thought that was pretty funny.

She happily is sending me out the replacement part, and said that while it is still plastic, it is redesigned, and I could call to replace it again if I needed to, but she didn't expect that to happen.

I asked her why only some representatives are replacing them for free, and she said she has been with Bostitch for a long time, and the younger folks (I think she was implying folks that came from the Black and Decker or Stanley sides of the merger, but maybe not) didn't know how it worked, and didn't realize there was a known issue with this compressor.

I couldn't be happier - even more reasons to be thrilled with my Bostitch compressor and guns - my father-in-law wonders why I always grab out the guns instead of hand-nailing stuff... It is way more fun, and often more accurate using the bostitch guns - I bought the siding attachment as well, and so have a gun for every project.

I just called 800-556-6696 and took option #2 as I am a Customer. Then just waited for an operator. Nice lady named Ashley answered. I told her that I had the air compressor with the defective pressure reducer and she immediately took my info and told me a new part would be shipped right away. No questions asked. No charge. Super easy.

Just called the 800 number and they said that they do not show any faulty parts for this model. They are directing me to the service center. They said that I can pay for parts directly or I can go to the service center and not pay for shipping. Does not sound like the customer service staff are consistant.I am getting ready for the run around.

My Porter Cable pancake outlet regulator doesn't seem to work.

If your quick coupler is not jammed up, (remove & test) and assuming you are pulling the regulator knob out to adjust the pressure and it is not stripped, you will need a new manifold kit.
There are about 6 versions of this unit so you will need model and type to get the correct part. There are no individual regulator parts available for this unit.

Large red pressure adjustment knob on my compressor is broken and will not screw on, compressor will not hold pressure

You may have to replace the regulator as many of them do not sell just the knob. If you go to this link and put your model number in the search box you will be able to see what is available for it. By the way, Stanley (Bostitch) merged with DeWalt so all the breakdowns for Bostitch can be found on the same site now.

DeWalt/Bostitch parts and owners manuals.

My compressor tank fills like it should and sounds normal but none of the tools are working. this happen to anyone else?

Have you adjusted the pressure regulator knob for air flow? If so, the regulator may be plugged. Clockwise increases line pressure.

No regulated pressure

Pressure regulator can fail giving little or no pressure at quick connect. There is a plunger inside of reg that can get stuck due to moisture/rust and /or threads of adjustment knob could strip. Back side of regulator (opposite the knob) find a hex nut. Remove nut (let out all the air from tank before removing nut) and pull plunger/spring away, clean , lube and reinstall for test. If still no joy, remove knob by moving stop pin up (tiny pin close to lip of knob and or spring clip) and turning counter clock wise. Remove the piston from cylinder of reg making note of how it was installed, lube and reinstall, make sure that the threads inside the knob are good. Replace knob and turn in to max pressure. If still no joy, replace reg or install temp air outlet. To install temp outlet, remove safety pop valve (remove all air from tank) and install tee fitting. Reinstall pop valve to one port of the tee fitting and quick connect to the other (or generic regulator ((sold at Lowes)) between quick connect). Good luck

Brand new compressor...air builds in tank but turning the regulator result in no change in the regulated pressure. Tried turning the regulator to make sure it moves freely, and it seems to, but still no...

The regulator has a very strong spring inside causing knob to get harder to turn as you increase the pressure (increase clockwise). If the knob is easy to turn most likely stripped inside. If knob gets tight as you turn then plunger at rear of regulator is stuck. On the back side of the manafold directly opposite the adjustment knob is a small nut housing a plunger. Let out all the air from the tank and remove the nut. Seperate the nut and plunger, lube and re-install. If the regulator knob is stripped you will need to replace the manafold or as a temp fix remove the safety valve (let out air from tank first) and install a tee fitting. On one port of the tee reinstall the safety valve and on second port install quick fitting for full tank pressure (or install aftermarket pressure regulator ).

Pressure builds to 150 psi but the regulator will not increase above 60 or so psi. this is causing the nail guns to not shoot correctly.

When the regulator fails, usually air will leak from under pressure knob, however in your case the nut must be stripped of its thread. May need to replace the manafold for fix(most regulators are built into manafold). To allow you to continue using the compressor, add another quickconnect at pressure release port. Let all air out of the tank. Remove pressure safety release, and install tee fitting. Re-install pressure safety on one of the ports of the tee fitting and a quickconnect at the second port. You will have tank pressure available while you order the manafold. Or just add a generic regulator before the quickconnect and forget about replacing manafold. Good luck.

My Bostich 6lb 2 HP oil free compressor was running fine until it kicked while I was using it as it sometimes does and would not stop. It actualy made a high pitch noise and began to smoke for a second...

The regulator on this model is prone to stripping and a kick would do it. Call the toll free number 800.556.6696 with your receipt and you should be able to get a replacement regulator.

Worked fine previously. Now when turned on the tank pressure comes up normally . However, the regulated pressure gauge reads zero and there is no airflow.

What happens when you twist the regulated pressure knob, as you would to increase the regulated pressure? Does the knob turn? Does it turn until it stops, but still reads zero? If so, it sounds like the regulator pressure spring is broken. That's inside the regulator, and you will probably have to replace the regulator.
