It is partially impossible to trace the phone but if you are knowing the 14 or 15 digit ip code of your phone than you can trace

    by your own you can not trace the phone first write a FIR to police station and tell them you have your IMEI no with you see if they help you in tracing and then go to the phone exchange they can only help in tracing the phone

Did you ever tried to contact the number of your lost phone? If someone finds it then he or she may answer your call and ask him or she to return it to you but if he or she replaces the sim card then it can't be trace anymore. You can try to contact your national telecommunication commission in your country about this matter.
